Hi all,
So our little Charlie girl gave us a scare yesterday. She was totally fine, I was playing with her mid day and was preparing her raw food meals so put her back in the cage. She ate a little of her old food (Marshall’s) I’m transitioning her, drank some water and went to sleep. She woke up and I thought she was running down to poop (Ferret Nation cage), when she started vomiting! About 5 times. And I’m pretty sure there was blood in it. Her poop all day has seemed regular to me. It has never been firm but formed and soft if that makes sense. Although thinking about it then, I remember cleaning her poop and smelling a faint smell of Metallicy like blood.
I started looking in her cage and saw that one of the toys were missing some parts of its top. It was a mock succulent felt cat toy and it had three flower like petals up top that fell flat. I saw one piece in her litter pan but the other two were missing. So I immediately thought Obstruction!! She continued to vomit when trying to drink water and didn’t really eat but I can tell she wanted to. She had finally pooped and it was this black jelly like tarry stringy mucousy poop.
I took her to a 24 hour emergency vet because it was 1 am and they took xrays which I’m still waiting to hear back about from radiologist specialist, however the vet said he didn’t see any obvious signs of obstruction, gave her a little bit of fluids and sent me home with panacur and metronidazole for “in case” she has intestinal parasites because it’s “common.”
Would you give those meds as a precaution? I know metronidazole to be a little tough on the stomach although it can firm up her stool. But what about the blood as well in her vomit?
I’m taking her to an exotic specialist now but wanted your advice as well. I haven’t started her on anything. She’s perked up over night and has eaten and been drinking water although I noticed she vomited again, maybe food? And this time no blood and her poop still had that black stuff in it.
