Hi! I recently fell down the "Is this safe for my ferret?" loophole, specifically when researching what kind of scented stuff I can put in the same room as my furry friend, and I was just hoping for a little clarification. I have a diffuser in my room, one where you add water, then a scent (typically an essential oil), and it sprays out a scented vapor. I know essentials oils are a big no no for ferrets, but I've seen vanilla extract (not oil) utilized in quite a few different ways when it comes to ferrets - potty training, added into the washer with bedding, simmering pots - and so I was wondering if it'd be safe for me to add that into my diffuser instead. The kind I bought is just Great Value "Pure Vanilla Extract," and the only ingredients are vanilla bean extractives in water, and alcohol (41%). Thanks in advance!

You know I honestly don’t know! I would think it would be safe- it’s not an essential oil, it’s a boiled down extract then suspended in alcohol, which will dissipate once it hits the air rapidly. I would say as long and the ferrets aren’t directly breathing the steam from the diffuser it should be ok, but I’m not confident.

Yes, extracts such as those used in baking are safe to use, and also a fun little element to use for sensory enrichment too. You'll have to let us know how it works with the diffuser!
