Are collars good for ferrets? Do they cause harm? I would like to have bell collars on my future ferrets to prevent my losing them, along with a matching harness.

Do not leave anything on a ferret unattended, collar, harness, or otherwise. Collars are especially problematic because they will inevitably come off (ferrets aren't really built for collars anyway, they're just a cylinder), and if you try tightening them, they become hazards more than anything. They will also rub the fur thin. That said, you could put a bell on a harness and have them wear that (while attended). The type of harness that ferrets are usually least able to slip out of is an H-style harness, with loops that go around the neck and behind the front legs and which are connected with one or two strips. I'd not even bother with collars. Not only are they very good at slipping them(I went through 8 in the first 2 months with 3 ferrets), but they are a major choking hazard. Even break away ones are a real risk as most ferrets don't weigh enough to trigger it to break.

Anoter point is that ferrets often find dark places to nap, and may be indisposed for an hour or more, and while they are you wouldn't hear the bell. . Teach your ferrets to come to squeakie toys and to their name. you still might not wake them right away if they are sleeping and hiding.
