Somehow he knew immediately! We babygate off the third floor stairs to Winnipeg and only let him up there when we ourselves are going up, which is rare, a few times a year (it’s a library of 100+ year old books and we don’t want the furo touching them) My husband needed something up there and replaced the babygate loosely and before we knew it Winnipeg had noticed, ripped it out of the wall taking paint off in the process, and began dancing upstairs. I replaced it tightly when I heard the commotion of it crashing to the floor and went to look, and he proceeded to lie on his side and paw at it for ten minutes afterward. The thing is, it looked just the same as it does when properly latched in. I don’t know how he knew it would give way this time if he started tugging at it.

They don't miss a single trick.
Any opportunity to create havoc and mayhem and they'll be there in a flash.

They are extremely observant little animals. I had to wear a band aid on my toe for a little while and while normally the ferrets ignored my toes, as soon as the band-aid went on they could not leave it alone. I'm always amazed at what they see and pay attention to.

I'll bet it sounded different when you set it up.

He might have observed your hubby miss a step. We had to take extraordinary measures to keep Scamp contained, and noe of the others have been nearly as tenacious. When Booger (Scamp) had his 2 day sabbatical, he pulled open a Marshall playpen panel that was secured halfway up. so I had to secure it so he couldnt bend the bars at the bottom. He know how that gate operated. Same as he know how to open drawers. I thought I knew ferret-proofing until he came along
