I'd given Rusty more space, to include a dig box, since he had been properly using the litter box. He'd been doing so well, but last night I was letting him hang out with his sister in the rest of the pen while I was getting their dinner ready. I came back to find he had peed outside the litter box instead of using the clean litter box in that area that he's used multiple times before. So back to square one he goes.

He's been using the litter box correctly, so he's been getting more space added. Now he's got about 40% of the pen allocated to him, enough space for a dig box, hammock, fleece blanket, plastic tunnel and one of his carpeted wood tunnel hideouts. I've got some more fence panels coming later this week so if he remains good I can give him half of the pen. If he remains using the litter box correctly for a week of that, should he be upgraded to full pen access again on a trial run? I've been giving him access to Reska's portion of the pen when I clean his litter box and he has used her litter box, so it seems like he's finally admitted he knows that's what he is supposed to do. I've been adding the vanilla scent to each litter box so presumably that's helped both of them associate that odor with a specific purpose.

Rusty has access to the full pen again. He was good overnight so hopefully he keeps it up. I'll still have to fence off an eating area for Reska so she can eat before Rusty does though since he's still on a diet.

The arrangement has worked out pretty well. I am fencing Reska into a comfy portion of the pen with a litter box, feeding den box, water bowl and sleeping bag for a while during feeding time and give each ferret half of the meal. Then after Reska's eaten as much as she wants, I take the fence down and Rusty invariably finishes off the leftovers. There was a urine accident in front of one of the litter boxes but hopefully that was a fluke. I'll make sure to wipe down in front of it with rubbing alcohol regularly so it stays clean.

It sounds like he is/has learned!

Somebody (almost guaranteed to be Rusty) went in front of the smaller litter box again. I wiped it down with vinegar to try to de-scent that area. If this happens again, he's going back to boot camp.

Rusty backslid on Saturday so he was confined to quarters (literally 25% of the pen) for a day for a chance to prove he was willing to use the litter box and he reluctantly reformed again. Hopefully this isn't something he repeatedly does.

Rusty messed up again yesterday and this afternoon. One more mistake and back to boot camp he goes.

It can take some time.

He uses the litter box so reliably when he's in boot camp. Hopefully after a few more days of training will remind him. If the scent training hasn't left an impression on him yet I don't know if it will be of any use to continue it. Should I keep adding fake vanilla extract to the litter box on the off chance that it helps?

Also keep in mind, some just never get it out of cage.
