I found a hand written flyer through my door that says, Missing Ferret and there is a number. I rang the number because although I know it's very naughty I put left over cat food out because there are many lost souls out there. A man said it's a silver-back and is his friends ferret on the next street. We are fairly close to some woods but it's a large housing estate. The note was posted about 3 weeks ago. A neighbour told me that her friend down the road saw a rat go from her garden to mine. I stopped putting cat food out. Then I realised it is probably the ferret. I've lived here for 30 years and only seen a few fieldmice and squirrels, never a rat. I relented thinking if it is the ferret it'd be easier for the guy down the road to do a stake out or something if he knows where it is. This morning I went out with the cat biscuits and there were droppings. I've looked online and it seems quite difficult to distinguish the droppings from rat droppings, but if this is a rat it's a big one and I just don't think it is. The droppings are very dark, almost black, they were quite soft but solid, about half an inch wide and 1and a half to 2 inches long. It looks as if the animal did them in situ after eating. Do you think this is rat or ferret?

Hi, as a former poultry farmer I would say from your description that it is rat droppings. Ferret poop tends to be less droppings and more snake like in appearance.
If you post a picture of the poop, I'm sure we could help more.
Cheers

Hi cockneyferret, Thanks for your answer. I did some more searching and walking round outside in the dark and found the culprit. It's a hedgehog! I searched for google images for their poop and it definitely matches what I'd found. I should have known.

Haha, sounds like the hedgehog's been having a regular feast. We have one that has taken a liking to our garden and we put food out every evening.
Cheers
