Boy has this been a week! So Matilda my baby of the bunch woke up this morning with a bit of discharge in one of her eyes. I used a warm wet cloth and wiped her eye. Besides that she has no sneezing or anything else she is eating fine and rough housing with the others. When my husband left for work at 4 this morning there is nothing wrong with the eye and she was spunky. I got up at 7 and she got up at 10 and the eye was shut that's when I noticed. It's almost a milky white in color(the discharge). They do have equine pine pellet litter in the cage for the litter box. The flooring of their room is carpet but vacuumed weekly. So I don't know if something happened and she got scratched maybe causing irritation or litter in the eye is a possibility. Anyone else have any experience with this? I do have an appointment for Monday just in case it starts taking a turn.

The area above the eye appears swollen and there appears to be a film over the eye. My concern would be with injury. You can gently clean with normal saline but I would be vetting ASAP. ciao

Yes, this has happened to one of my ferrets. From what my records say he had been squinting his right eye for a week or so and then swelling occurred. At that point, I took him in for an emergency visit. They flushed his eyes out. They recommended performing diagnostic testing such as Schirmer Tear Test, tonometry, and fluorescein staining. I chose to have the staining done. The result came back that he had stippling present (suggestive of poor tear film quality). First they gave me Ofloxacin eye drops, which he had a reaction to. Then they gave me Neopolybac Ophthalmic oitment, which cleared it up.
Hope that helps!

Thanks for the replies! So yesterday when this all started she had the matted eye at around 10 in the morning warm compression to get it open and she still had white in it but as it leaked out I used a warm cotton ball to wipe her eye being as gentle as possible. I contacted my husband at work and he came home and we attempted to find a vet to see her yesterday but everyone was booked up. So after extensive research and a talk with the vet, that I have an appointment with Monday, she suggested refresh tears to keep it clear til we get there. After all this it was around 1 or 2 in the evening and her eye had cleared up(without the eye drops). Later that day probably around 7 or 8 my husband and I left to get drops just to be on the safe side and sure enough when we got back home she had stuff in the eye, again not green or anything like that just goopy but not matted shut. So I used the drops and cleared her eye. This whole time she has been acting completely normal eating and drinking and playing with the others. This morning woke up at 730 and her eye was shut again so I used warm cotton ball to get it open then eye drops to clean it again being very gentle to not irritate the eye. She has been a champ and staying so calm while I clean it. So Monday we have an appointment and I'm hoping they can shed some light on this. I know my husband read something about the tear ducts and her being so young yesterday that that could have something to do with it but I guess we will see. I'll give an update on Monday.

It could be pink eye (conjuntivitis). You'll probably get antibiotic drops from the vet, but we've used triple antibiotic ointment on it. It is best to get it checked for injury in any case. It's possible she has a foreign object under the lid. I may actually caused one case as I was kissing Lola, she flinched and I kissed her open eye. A few days later she had some discharge.

Thank you for the reply! She has an appointment today at 230. So far its looking way better than when I took the picture. I have been using the refresh tears twice a day. I also have a boy with a small cough but it almost sounds like a video I seen on here that Sherry posted a while ago that was attributed to hair being in the throat. I'm debating on bringing him a long since we will be there. We will be leaving tomorrow to leave the country and if he isn't feeling better by tomorrow we will be canceling our flight.

So Matilda did extremely well with her appointment. They put dye in her eye and then used a black light to look for any scratches. There were no scratches in the eye, but right under the eyelid was a little inflamed. They believe she may have had something get in that irritated it. They sent me home with ointment to put on the eye twice a day for a week. She is doing great. She seems a little worn out from the whole experience, which if I had someone poke at me I would be too haha. Well deserved nap with Gizmo

A scratch is called a corneal abrasion. Being a mechanic for many years, I;ve had it done several times. She should be ok.
