I took him to the vet yesterday afternoon and came home with medication, but I can't help but feel they've missed the problem. FYI, his vet is a raw-friendly vet who's been in practice for 10+ years and specializes in ferrets. (Griffith Small Animal Hospital in Austin, TX).
Ezra eats entirely raw meals. Whole chicks, whole mice, and ground whole rabbit, interchangeably. He normally eats 8-10 oz a day and is a big boy (1.3kg).
Unfortunately, a lot has happened recently that I need to fill you in on. About a week ago, he had a fall. This was from about 5 feet up and he landed on a concrete floor. Broke one of his canines off, split down the middle, but no other injuries according to the vet. The fracture is not bleeding or high up on the tooth. Next, we got a brand new baby ferret from Petco, which we kept for 3 days and 2 nights. We were holding onto him to give to a friend, who now has him. The ferret was male and 3 months old, seemed healthy and had firm and normal stools.
7 days ago - fall onto concrete
5 days ago - baby ferret introduced
3 days ago - Ezra began having runny, green stool
3 days ago - baby ferret removed
2 days ago - Ezra stopped eating entirely AND started digging at his mouth?
When I say digging at his mouth, he will try to drink water and then open his mouth as wide as possible and use both hands to scrape at the top of his mouth. He's not hurting himself or bleeding, he's just in clear distress and pain. There was no build-up to this. It started suddenly. The focus seems to be on the OPPOSITE side of his mouth where the broken tooth is. He started doing this, and stopped eating, simultaneously.
I took him to our vet the very first day. They felt his abdomen, checked him out, took a stool sample and tested it for something that starts with a C (I'm so sorry I don't remember), and then prescribed him these:
- Albon Susp #66370 (this is a coccidiostat), 0.5 mL per day for 8 days.
- Metronidazole - Flagyl 25mg #66364, 2 pills by mouth daily
then, I am to call the vet in 5 days and ask him if I should give Ezra the following (which he sent home w us):
- Panacur Liquid #66371, 0.2 mL per day for 5 days
The vet said he didn't see any reason to vaccinate for distemperment, saw no need to extract the tooth AND said that ferrets (like cats) will not be deterred from eating due to tooth pain, so this wasn't our focus. He also said that I should call tomorrow or the next day if there's not improvement in Ezra's stools, but it DOES seem they've firmed up marginally (from a phlegm texture to just a loose diarrhea texture).
So sorry for the long post and thank you for reading. Any comfort or advice very welcome. He is about 5 years old and is extremely important to me. Thank you.
