1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
Honestly, I don't remember. Somewhere about the time I heard about it for cats a year or so ago.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I'd like to feed Frankenprey as our next step. All are currently eating the transition soupie and FDR
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
For their health, because it's the right diet, and to get them off big pet food company products
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It requires a commitment of several months at minimum. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. The switch takes time and effort every single day. It can also be extremely frustrating at times. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc), or limited time due to work, then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing and realistically able to make the necessary time commitment?
Absolutely
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? If so, what medications are they currently on? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
Four, in order of acquisition
Josie, 9 mo female, no health issues, winter pudgy, had her since May
Jessie, 5 mo female, no health issues, high average weight, had her since mid-August
Minky, 2 yo female, no health issues, high average weight, had her since October
Blondie, appears to be 4 yr old at least, is improving in balance, was told she was deaf and near blind, but she shows only slightly deaf if at all. Vet says it may have been her ear mite infestation now that she's cleared up. underweight but steadily gaining. At times wobbly in her hind end, but that's also improved. Watching for insulinoma signs. She was in very bad shape when rescued in Sept.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
Twice a day: Transition Soup from the recipe, blended with FDR Stella & Chewys, or Mama Dawn's Magic Soup. Egg yolks once a week, "Pickle Juice" for treats. Still allowing some NV Ultimate Protein Duck when they haven't eaten much of the soup, for everyone but Minky, who won't touch it. She was on the soup when we got her.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
N/A
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
I'm disabled by a nerve disease similar to MS, so I'm home most every day.
I am back to having ferrets after a gap of several years. Got my first ferret in Southern California in the late 80s. She was my travelling companion when I drove OTR for 3 years. I've had an intact pair we rescued from a backyard breeder, and I was active in a Ferret Legislation group. Long story short, I came in off the road, where I'd adopted another ferret from a driver. Moved to KS and did some rescue, hospice care for the shelter a couple times, and ended up with up to 5 more foster fails
After several years and a short relationship without them, I'm back to being a ferret lady.
The girls we have now are mostly free roam, either in their own room/area, or the rest of the house.
They are caged at night and if we're not home in a Double Ferret Nation. I live with severe depression and anxiety, they keep me alive some days when it's really dark in here.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer? 24/7
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible). see below
11. Do you have a scale sufficient to measure soup ingredients AND to regularly weigh your ferrets?
Yes, a small gms or oz kitchen scale. I already weigh them once a week.
12. Have you met the requirements for this program? Are you at least 18 years of age? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
Yes, Yes, Yes, and in the fridge/freezer now.
13. Do you understand that if your mentor or an admin recommends seeking veterinary care and you refuse to seek appropriate care you may be dropped from the mentoring program?
Understood. I have a ferret specialist within 30 mi
14. We occasionally have a wait for a Mentor to be available. While you wait we encourage you to get started by creating your own switching thread under Diet Transitions where all of our mentors and members can help you while you wait for your personal mentor. See here --> holisticferret60.proboards.com/board/66/diet-transitions
Will do.
