Hey everyone. my big (little) boy Paco crossed the rainbow bridge this morning. he had just turned two last month. : ' (( Two days ago around dinner time he started worrying me: his stomach kinda swollen and his energy very low, poops runny, etc. I ended up calling the emergency vet and told them the symptoms. they said there wasn't much they could do besides maybe bloodwork ? (this wasn't the ferret vet) so schedule an urgent care appt early the next morning. after reading more of the boards here, I thought he had a blockage. i tried to give him the blockage protocol but he just Would Not Have it. i slept next to him on the couch all night, though oddly enough he crawled into the pet carrier on the opposite side. yesterday morning i rushed him to the vet, they took some x-rays, etc. by this time his poops were rly dark and his stomach Really Swollen. the vet said he most likely had juvenile lymphoma, the kind that spread like THAT. like Super Fast. and there wasn't much I could do but make him comfortable, especially given his current state. ((( I was supposed to bring him back this morning, but he passed right before we got into the car. when I woke up, he had come around to the couch to face me. I kissed and talked to him one more time, went to the bathroom, and when I got back, he was gone. he just hung on to see me one last time. I had him for just over a year. He was such a bright light in my life, and he will never be forgotten. this is my first time dealing with a ferret loss, and it's extremely tough. especially since it happened so quick, and he was so young. I love you paco. I love you so much.

I am so sorry for your loss I'd also have a necrospy done, just so you know for sure. It is amazing the peace of mind it gives you.

i didn’t know necroscopies were even a thing, let alone an option 😢 i think paco has already been sent to the crematorium. (god, just Writing that).... d*mn .
this happened so fast. on Monday to think he was hopping around chirping as usual ...
thank you everyone for the condolences .. this is so hard.
it’s so amazing the different reactions to loss the ferrets have. Misio seems to feel the loss keenly while kinga seems to be relieved it’s over (even tho it only took 3 days).

I'm so sorry for your loss. We don't know why, but losing a ferret for most of us has been the worst pet loss we've experienced. They are just so cute and full of life and enjoy just being ferrets so much, it seems. My Sumo passed from JL just past his 3rd birthday. I hate cancer.

how do you stop yourself from spiraling down “i should’ve done/noticed this” thoughts? it’s all i can do lately. (

That is normal unfortunately. And you have to stop yourself from second guessing. All you can do from here is use this to help improve how you care for the others.

Nannah, juvenile lymphoma is so malignant that there isn't much anyone can do to stop it, no matter when it's detected. Don't blame yourself. You didn't cause it. It hurts, I know. I've had and lost over 20 fuzzies in 10 short years, and except in case of accidents, I did all I could afford to do for them. They just don't live long enough for us. I had one old gal make it past 9, but she was in rough shape at the end, and another 5 year old who just starting showing signs of insulinoma. In our case, (me and Dar24) we always found room in our hearts for a new one (or two). Just love em while you can.
The good thing is you found this forum. There is a lot of experience to be shared if you decide to give a forever home to another fuzz.

how do you stop yourself from spiraling down “i should’ve done/noticed this” thoughts? it’s all i can do lately. ( You first need to realize that your ferret is not the first, nor will he be the last, sadly to pass away from JL. You did everything you could do given the information you had. Its pretty much impossible to not always feel like you could have done something more, that's very normal. This site is amazing and full of amazing people who can help you with your questions without feeling like you're being judged. Owning ferrets isn't easy, because you have very few resources out there to help you. I hope this post doesn't come off as mean or insensitive, because I really don't mean it that way and completely understand what its like to lose a ferret. I lost mine my first ferret in June. I really found it more helpful when I could talk with people who had the same experiences, because it helped to let me know I didn't do anything wrong.

unclejoe and Sparrow, thank you so much. and no, you didn’t come off as insensitive at all!!! not even a bit. thank you for talking to me about this. i knew about this cancer but not about the juvenile form. it’s mind blowing how awful it is, and yeah, i wish more people and vets knew more about ferrets and their conditions. i’ll definitely have more room in my heart for more fuzzies. :’ ) i just wish they lived longer , yeah. poor babies. i’ll try to be more active on the forums i think now
