I’m wanting to add a few dig boxes into my bedroom for the noodles but I’m not sure what to use. I have had styrofoam and ping pong ball pits but my ferrets decided that both were tasty treats (silly weasels!!!). Can you make a sand dig box? I read a little about rice dig boxes as-well, I’m just worried about sand or rice getting stuck in their noses or ears. Does that actually happen or am I just paranoid? Has anyone used anything other than sand or rice?
Thanks !!

Long grain rice is fantastic. They love to dig in it, and it absorbs excess oils at the same time. Large beans like kidney beans. Macaroni noodles. Play sand. Marbles. Peat(keep slightly dampened to decrease dust).Towels, plastic bags with handles cut(supervision only). NEVER use regular styrofoam as that can cause a fast blockage. Instead use cornstarch packing peanuts.

Thanks!!! I will definitely be getting a bunch of those things today! i read about styrofoam shortly after I got them which Is why I took them away immediately! It’s been a few weeks since they played in them last, I haven’t noticed any straining when they poop. Should I be worried? I have Vaseline, and pumpkin on hand just in case.

If they'd not had issues before Tasha, odds are they will be fine

Try sand (that's safe, right?) Or water. I have heard of ferret owners that will fill up a plastic bin with water and ferrets play in it. Additionally, in the sand, ferrants will hide treats in there or grubs and the ferret will dig it up. Others will use dirt or leaves.
Since it causes a mess, I think some people will use a deep storage bin or put down a mat that the box is on. Some others (with supervision) will take this fun outside.

I currently have a big dig box of rice that only one of our ferrets like to play in. But they also like to play in the tub with a little bit of water, as long as they are the ones getting in and out of the tub. We use a towel and drape over the side of the tube and then they can climb in and out as they please. All while supervised.
