Taz is pretty good about using his litter box while in his cage. He will pee and poop on a particular shelf, but he only seems to do it when he feels his litter box needs to be changed, which he gets a complete cleaning every other day, which I may just have to do every day to keep him from doing it. My problem is that I am having a hard time training him to go in a litter box outside the cage. He has his own bedroom, which I've talked about before, so I want to be able to let him free roam in there, but until he starts using his litter box I can't. I have tried catching him in the act and when I go to put him inside the litter box he just jumps out and runs around (almost like he didn't need to go at all). I am currently trying small animal potty training litter to see if that helps attract him to that box, but are there other products that I can try that might work better?

Put litter boxes in all the places in his room that he likes to go. I had that problem too but now my little guy will go to his box all the time. Make sure the litter box is big. I also put paper down under the box and around the box in case he didn't get in the box. Then I'd change the paper. I kept some old feces in the box so he smells where he is suppose to go.

I do have a little old feces in the box, but he doesn't have specific spots he likes to go in, that's part of the problem. The last time he decided to poop on the floor I accidentally put my hand in it! I do use the puppy pads in the cage underneath the box, so I do have pads, but he just doesn't have a specific place. He's an equal opportunity pooper. I was hoping some of those pheromone products for training would work for a ferret.

When I let my ferret out to roam his room, I'll let him play a few minutes then put him in his box outside the cage a few times during play time. I know he will have to go at some point. Try putting him in a box(es) a few times while he is out. Maybe he will get the idea.

I'll keep trying, so far he thinks its a box to lunge himself from, lol! I hope he starts to get the idea sooner rather than later.

Are the sides of the box really high? My ferret doesn't like really high sides. He has a shallow litter box. Picky guy! Lol

Yes, which he needs and doesn't mind. Both litter boxes are the same high back Marshall boxes, just different colors. I didn't have these issues with Sparrow (I miss Sparrow ). Taz is only picky about it being clean, which is why I will likely end up doing daily cleaning with his litter boxes verses the every other day I'm doing now.

Yeah, I clean my litter box twice a day. Lol. He likes his clean too.
Every ferret is different. Lol. Sparrow could have taught Taz a thing or two! Lol. Like use the litter box!
Some cats are like that too. My cat is good with her litter box, whereas my sister's cat is very bad. She doesn't always use the litter box and will mess beside the box or somewhere else. My sister has to tell the cat to use the box when she is home.

I have 4 boxes/potty places in a 10X12' room for 2 ferrets(at a time) Thankfully they "mostly" use one of those myriad spots. To do some intensive training, start by sitting in there with him. When you see him backing up, pop him in the box and treat. Let him get out. Watch again, when he backs up pop in the box and treat. Sooner or later with this he'll get the idea that box=treat. When/if he uses the box, again treat. For treat I use a lick of oil.

Any clue as to how to get him to eat a treat? Seriously, this ferret is weird. I bought him some Orijen cat treats (smaller sized and my dog isn't too friendly about sharing his treats) and he won't touch them at all. I've tried using oil on them, because I put the oil on his food once a week and he doesn't seem to mind. He loves attention though (well, he's a ferret so that's probably a moot point), so I just change my tone and tell him "good boy" or "good job, Tazzy" when I want to praise his behavior.
Also, do you guys ever line your litter boxes? I was looking and saw ones for cats and thought about doing that for Taz because he tends to really poop in the corners of his box creating a stack of poo throughout the day.
