I've set up an outdoor play area for my two ferrets (1.5 yrs). Rocks along the bottom of the wooden property fence and pavers along the 2' chicken wire. Yes, they can climb the wire - they're nice and usually don't. Besides, they're supervised when outside, always. They Love to dig and the big corner behind the bushes is not very grass covered. I was thinking of mulching that area to reduce the amount of mud collected during play time, but I've not seen any information on what would be ferret safe. There are plenty of places to dig in their space. Another option would be to put down sod, assuming they'd leave it be long enough for it to root, but it's a shady spot. Also looking at a possible covered sand box... Is that OK for ferrets, assuming I get "play sand"?
Thanks for your advice.

Ok, read through the forum on the play sand, likely go that route. We got pavers to line the rest of the fence and can use the rocks to cover most of the muddy area. Also picked up a 10' x 4" perforated black irrigation tube for the furlings to run through.

Sounds like it's going to be a great play space for them

That sounds awesome! We hav a cabin that we bring our furry trio to and I was making them an outdoor playpen out of chicken wire too! But that’s a great idea with the pavers to line the bottom. I was having a bit of trouble trying to secure the chicken wire to the ground without them digging under it right away.
It’s almost impossible to ferret proof an outdoor area for them without always having them on a leash. Which sucks because I either have to take them out one at a time or risk massive leash tangling and chaos as they run every which way. Of course they are always supervised in the pen but it’s sooo much easier and more enjoyable for everyone if they have freedom from the leashes.
As for digging, they love it! Mud, sand, dirt or whatever is hilarious. Ellie is currently determined to dig out a home under a piece of plywood i laid down on the ground in their pen. Also grass, they love it. I think it’s the feeling as the perfect height is about an inch and a half. Just enough to scratch their bellies as they bounce and slide and dook around.
I love bringing the ferrets outside!

As they're supervised while outside I will only make this a short warning....chicken wire isn't good at containing ferrets. Yes, they climb it but they also can go through it. Learned the hard way, so just passing the warning along ciao

Oh, good. You've given me a plan for next spring! I love taking them out. When we only had three, I could use two of the gates joined together and it worked. I could keep an eye on the one that manages to escape EVERYWHERE, but, with five, that's too great a risk. A fun habitat space, though... Thanks for the inspiration!
