I am going to be getting a ferret again after a long hiatus- so much has changed with new knowledge on healthcare, thankfully, with approaches to keeping your ferret disease free....I plan on getting a baby, feeding raw, and having him DES implanted...I have read in some places online that some people recommend giving Melatonin in conjunction with DES as a preventative? If so, I would attempt the oral approach first, so how much should I give? I will be keeping my ferret cage in a very dim room with window shades for at least 14 hours per day- want to make sure I am well educated and am doing EVERYTHING I possible can to keep my ferret healthy. Thanks for the feedback!

The last time I asked, Melatonin was only effective for treatment and not for prevention.

Melatonin does nothing at all for the Adrenal Disease itself, it cannot prevent it and it cannot treat it either. It can only helps cosmetically, eg. helping with the itchies and help in regrowing some of the lost fur (and it doesn't always help 100% in that department for some ferrets either). So, for that aspect, a lot of people will implant with Ferretonin (the Melatonin implant) ALONG with the DES implant for the following: DES to actually treat the disease, and Melatonin to help soothe the itch and help fur growth.
As a preventative, DES would need to be implanted yearly, and be implanted before the ferret's first birthday, if I recall correctly.

The last time I asked, Melatonin was only effective for treatment and not for prevention. I posted on another thread that melatonin (Ferretonin implant) can help relieve symtoms while the deslorelin (Suprelorin F) implant takes effect. The Des can take a full shed cycle to produce new hair growth while the melatonin can start growing hair in less than a month. Our first adrenal case, Moe, grew his full coat back in a month on oral melatonin, 3 mg/day, before he got lupron.

This particular response really helped me....I didn't really know for sure HOW melatonin helped....really cleared things up for me....thanks so much!

I suppose in truth they're not lying per say....it does treat symptoms but it does nothing for the disease itself. It also does nothing to prevent the disease either ciao

Thanks for the feedback! That alone does not work. Been there, done that and still ended up with adrenal ferrets. Better to use a deslorelin implant once a year to prevent adrenal (or delay onset). Implant as early as possible. Around 5-6 months of age.
