Yeah it is sad how people treat exotics. Most animals actually. Mikey and I were actually talking about that on Skype last night and we both agreed that the good majority of pet owners probably don't even bring their animals in at all. I would just feel like a terrible person if I let an animal fester in front of my own eyes without doing everything I could to either stop the problem, or put them out of their misery in the least.
The hardest part about this surgery, or partS rather are: 1) we can have NO idea as to how Tito will respond to the anesthesia, and 2) I will not know until after the surgery if it will be say $300, or $800. $300-400 I could make work. It would be tight, but I could manage it (thanks to Pet Assure - I LOVE them!!!!). $800....I don't think I can do that. Even with Pet Assure that is still $600 out of pocket. I've already used up my loan money and savings. My job is a good one, but not that good...
I am going to have to call into the vet again today and leave a message fore the Tech, because she will be in sooner than the vet. It will be a few days before either is in though. This is an emergency clinic so their hours are a little unusual. Each vet alternates days, and alternates between walk-in and appointment. They are the only ones who will take Pet Assure though and there is NO way I could afford it without that 24% discount! :S
As for using the hormones now, and saving up for surgery later, that is a toughie. When they are not gravid, the follicles (ovaries) are apparently REALLY REALLY difficult to find. So surgery would be longer and more expensive. Versus right now, they are all big and full of egg, so it will be quite obvious where they are. If I do induce her to lay with a hormone injection, we will just run into this problem again next season. Also, there will still be a chance that she will be unable to expel ALL of the eggs, and will become egg bound anyways. Only then it will be harder to find the follicles again.
Kind of puts me in a bit of a Catch 22...
