Hi lylyann i'm not an expert or anything but I have been on the soupy stage for about a month or two.
I could not find the hearts alone
Have you tried Asian markets?
is this okay to feed gizzards as well?
From my understanding gizzards are a good muscle meal for ferrets however not required for the soup, i'm not sure if adding them will effect the balance of the diet so you may want to get advice from someone else before adding them to your soup.
If I follow the recipe, how long will this food last?
You'll probably end up using it before it went bad. I have two ferrets so I double the recipe and that only lasts me a week or two. (I have kits)
Do I freeze it all together and only take some out to thaw?
Yes, I pour my soupies in an ice cube tray let them freeze and then dump everything in a zip lock bag and then I take out what I feel like I need for the day and put those in a plastic baggie or plastic tub and keep those in my fridge for easy access.
How much should they be eating and how many times a day?
Depends on your ferrets,as adults female ferrets eat about 1-3oz a day and males about 2-5oz. A kit can eat up to 4x as much. Also seasons kind of change how much they eat as well. Feed them as often as they will eat.
Do I have to feed kibble as well with this recipe in between meals or is it balanced alone?
If they are eating the soup willingly you can take away the kibble just make sure they are getting enough to eat.
Do I have to feed them separately? If not how do I know they’re getting an adequate amount of meat, livers, hearts?
When you have a big group like that it's pretty hard to keep track who's eating what i'm not sure how you tell i'm thinking maybe by weighing them you can tell who's been losing weight and maybe that tells you they might not be eating as much. Maybe just keeping an eye to make sure you see everyone getting to eat at some point. I feed mine how ever they will eat sometimes it's one by one other times they are together. For example I leave them food over night I have no way of knowing who eats what. I tally all their food together as a whole and then divide it by how many ferrets I have and see if the number is in a good range assuming they both ate as they needed. If that makes any sense. I'm not sure if thats how you should do it but just how i've been going about it.
How long can I leave it out?
Soups: 6-8 hours
Grinds: 8-12 hours
Chunks: 10-24 hours (depending on size eg. the bigger the chunks are, the longer they'll last)
Bone-in Meats: 12-24 hours (again, depending on size)
Whole Prey: up to 48 hours
Have you looked into signing up for a mentor?
I hope I was able to help you a little, I understand how daunting everything seems. I wish you luck on your transition.
