Hello there,
I will try my best to give as much information as possible. A little over a year ago, I brought a baby ferret into the home as a friend for my 3 year old male...stupidly, I did not research enough beforehand to learn about the quarantine period and, unfortunately, the baby girl had ECE which in turn transferred to my boy. She barely had any symptoms which was nice but my boy got hit pretty hard. Green slime and bird seed poos along with terrible lethargy, vomiting, and the terrifying refusal to eat. It was bad enough for him that I had to hand feed him "mush" for months after the initial sickness...I was prepared to have to feed him myself for the rest of his life (which i would have done, willingly) but one day, out of the blue, he started eating his kibble again on his own (extremely happy day for me). His poops and energy became normal again after a few days. I had taken him to the vet as soon as I saw the green and they gave him the subcutaneous fluids as well as a round of amoxicillin.
So, the problem: whether it be every month or every other month he has a "flare up" or some kind of reoccurrence of runny poos (sometimes green) with low energy (just wants to sleep). No vomiting, teeth grinding, or shows of pain when I touch his belly and still continues to eat and drink. When this happens I make sure I hand feed him mush and syringe water into his mouth to make sure he doesn't become dehydrated. A few months ago I had the vet do the entire bloodwork screening for anything ferret related: adrenal panels, exotic cultures, cancer screens and even x-rays. Every single test came back great, the vet wasnt worried about anything expect that he was slightly anemic. He said this may be why he has these sudden decreases in energy but he didnt prescribe anything for it because it wasnt extreme.
Last night he had another flare up and it is still continuing at this moment. I let him have full run of the bedroom (completely ferret-proofed) so I could examine his poos and every one of his piles was mushy and runny and one was a dark green mucos. He's 4 now, and regardless of the clean bill of health from the vet, I panic everytime this happens thinking he's not going to pull thru this time.
Basically what this whole novel is getting at: do you guys think this is a reoccurrence of the ECE? Is that a common thing? Is there anything at home I can do for him? I'm afraid that the vet will just give him another round of antibiotics which I know is not good for their digestive systems, so I wanted to seek advice elsewhere first before going thru with that. He has always bounced back every time he has a flare up but I feel I'm missing something important and don't want to lose him too early...he's my child just like all of yours are to you. If you need any further info (sorry again for the novel) please ask away, I may have left things out in my haste to get this out here.
