Hello- this is my first time on the forum and I am excited to be here! I am interested in getting a ferret in the next few months. I want to start off by saying that I have considered adopting, but I would rather get a ferret under a year (and I do not want to support mill ferrets)! Even if I could find a ferret for apodtion under a year it will probably be a mill ferret and I understand that they are more prone to health problems. At this point I am just fiddling around with my options and thought this may be a good resource.
I am located in Northeast Kansas and I haven’t had much luck finding private breeders in this area. Does anyone know of private breeders in or around my area (Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri)?
I appreciate any feedback!!
Edit: I have also found US breeder that ship, but this makes me feel slightly uncomfortable - any suggestions/experience with shipping ferrets?

I've shipped ferrets from as far as the UK and as near as the southern US without issue. Am I comfortable with it...no, but then I have reservations about shipping myself from point a to point b too lol. I shipped a pair of albino kits last year to the west coast and received a poley jill from the south of US. Everyone got to their destinations with minimum of fuss. I would suggest that you go to the AFA website and check out some shows. Attend one and play meet and greet the breeders. You won't meet a lot of the breeders but you will meet some and it will give you an idea as to what's out there and what are you looking for. Babies are on the ground now and over the next couple of months. Breeders are taking names and doing checks. Nancy Wills is in your general location but I don't know what her plans are for kits this year, I think she is planning a litter. I've got a couple of litters planned but I don't know what I'm doing yet. It really depends on what you're looking for ciao

Heather-
I have found a breeder in Houston, TX ( Top Notch Ferrets) but they breed angoras and I have heard that they can have their own health issues. I also found Middle Earth Ferretry in Kentucky and they ship but they are also angoras. I do not care about color (although I do have a certain liking for the lighter ones)- my main concern is health! My top reason for wanting to go through a breeder is being able to spay/neuter at the proper age to try prevent adrenal gland disease among other things.

Hi yes you are correct angoras can come with there own type of health problems but they are also able to become adrenal breeding plays a tiny part with regard to adrenal lighting diet play a huge part think like a wild ferret in fall food becomes harder to find light hours are decreasing so its adrenal gland says ok shut down a rest for the winter in spring they receive longer daylight hours and food is more abundant so the adrenal gland kicks in the body sends the message breeding season this message is still sent in a fixed ferret ( only difference being they dont come into season )if they receive more hours of light ( indoor lighting ) than the normal outdoor cycle then the body clock is going to go hay wire and the adrenal glands simply wont shut down and take a rest then medical issues occur good luck with your search take care bye for now Bev

Another breeder who may ship is PVC ferrets. While she has an angora line, I believe she keeps her standards strictly separate from them.

Yes, Pam, (PVC) does keep her angora lines separate from her sandy lines. She's had a litter down but I'm positive she was planning another or so. It's getting harder to find clean lines (without angoras but there are breeders if you know where to look or who to ask). The big angora breeders, you've mentioned and they are in high profile right now...the public wants their angoras. All I'm going to have this year might be hybrids (not due for another month or more). I do not breed angoras. Albinos scheduled for next year. I don't know if Peggy (Woodlands Ferretry) is going to have another litter or not. She just updated her poley line this year and had a litter earlier (beautiful points litter...no angoras Casanova's breeder), this year so that may be the total of her year. As I mentioned earlier (can't seem to get the stupid flag thing to work)....Nancy Wills might be having a litter (I know that Bella's sister falsed) but I don't know if she's got other plans or not....but you will probably be dealing with hybrids with her too...she's Bellatrix's breeder. Joan has kits, but they're hybrids too. ciao

Even though this combination does not insure a healthy ferret- I would like to keep them as healthy as I can.

Are their usually kits still available then (also I have heard some breeders keep hobs longer than Jills as kits and I would like a hob)?

Oh, my.....totally flubbed that contact Yes, PVO. Pam's crew. There may be kits by the end of the summer, I know that one of my kits (a hob) went to their new home in Sept. and his adopted brother was purchased at the Buckeye Bash in August. Obelix was a gentle soul who needed to spend extra time with his sibs. I kept him back. My crew weren't ready to leave until August, anyway. I shipped them out when I went down to the Bash last summer. I breed on a natural cycle, so my guys have their kits usually May/June/July time frame. There are other breeders who also breed on that time table too. The kits you're seeing on the ground right now, will probably not be ready to go to their new homes until at least the end of June/July time frame. The ones born this month and next will be late summer releases ciao

I have two ferrets from PVO and two angoras from Top Notch Ferrets. All four are beautiful ferrets! The PVO ferrets are strong-willed as is one of my Top Notch babies. The other Top Notch baby...I think she is the calmest ferret I have ever seen!! Both Pam and Rita are wonderful to work with!
