Ok so here I am where I needed to be..lol I am working on getting my two fuzzy's on raw...so far they eat baby food chicken and turkey..I mix one egg on Sunday (yoke only) with it and they eat that up now. I can get Thor to eat a bit of cut up chicken thigh mixed with baby food, add 250mg of Taurine, egg shell..two times a day. I know they should only get one tesp. of Salmon so I add a little...going to day to get hearts and start that....had trouble finding them...I have my scale now too...wow..I'm getting there, and this morning there poop was very good..and suggestion will be greatly appreciated..thank you Linda

You're welcome, I'm really glad you were able to get your thread up and running. I'm sure we'll be able to get Thor and Loki (I have one too, LOL) onto a balanced raw diet. For hearts, I know some grocery stores will sell chicken hearts or beef hearts (or beef tongue as I mentioned in my message), along with chicken liver, beef liver, and some also do beef kidney without needing to search too much. Of course, this can vary from location to location. One thing I can tell you everywhere, is that buying the mix packet of Chicken Hearts & Gizzards is a sore rip-off, you might get a heart in a pile of gizzards. I'd also like to mention that it should be well worth your while if you can see if there is a local Asian store or Ethnic market nearby, even if it is a bit of a drive. Asian stores can provide you with the necessary organs, as well as a lovely variety of proteins (different animals) to feed your ferrets, all at reasonable costs. Other than that, there is also the online option of ordering from an online raw provider such as Hare Today or My Pet Carnivore, though they may be a bit more costly compared to a local store or Asian market. And as Sherry already mentioned, it will be helpful if you can clue us in on your fuzzies ages. You can also take a photo of how big the pieces they are currently eating are, just use something to help give perspective like a coin, teaspoon, or hold some in your hand.

Good evening guys and thank you so much for being here for me...Thor and Loki are going to be a year old this month,April, not sure what day couldn't get that info. They are eating small pieces, Thor the male and biggest is eating the best. I'm feeding baby food organic, turkey or chicken...and then adding small pieces of chicken thigh, egg shell, just a pinch or two, and 250mg taurine..for the past 2 days I have given the taurine...on Sunday I gave each farm raised egg yoke mixed with chicken pieces, baby chicken, taurine and egg shell and they loved it. I have all so noticed they are not pooing as much and today it was yellow agin and yesterday Thor's was brown and solf, that was before they ate the egg yesterday Loki's is running and she is sleeping more like Thor did when I started them on the baby meat, Thor has been on it for 2 weeks now all most.Loki has only ate it a few times and then backs off a day. I have only given egg yoke for 3 weeks now, and I started with just that, once a week. I will need to figure out how to get pictures on here next, I will work on that..lol...I tried...I need to read more on the list you gave me on my last post Linda, I am going to do that now..Sherry , they are not eating very chunky food yet...take care till tomorrow..

They can eat bone!! I thought the same!! I chopped up the bones into smaller pieces and my guy was able to eat it. I was there watching him to make sure he was ok. They have strong jaws and sharp teeth!! They can handle it! Start with smaller bones like chicken wing tips. You will be amazed!!

Ferrets can most definitely eat bones! Even wee ones. They are obligate carnivores, their teeth are designed exactly for doing such. It's the things like kibbles, soups, grinds and other soft things that honestly ruin their teeth by building-up plaque and tartar that lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease which ends with their teeth needing to be pulled. Crunching through bones helps not only to keep their teeth clean and healthy, but it also promotes overall GI tract health. One does sometimes have to let them build up a bit of jaw strength for it though. Gizzards are a wonderful and seriously chewy meat that can help get that started. Beginning with softer bones also helps a lot. Quail and frog legs are amazing bone-in starters because of the soft bones they have, along with your basic chicken wings. Cornish Game Hens also have soft, smaller bones, but since CGH is just a juvenile chicken, your menu should never heavily depend on it. It can however be used as a bone-in starter for a bit. This link thoroughly details how to go about the process, along with a visual video: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/18359/smashing-bone-beginner-ferrets

I'm going to try the chicken wings this week end...I am taking Thor and Loki to the vet on Fri. and hope they check out ok...I found out the des implant is available here in Charleston WV...I'm getting an experienced vet they told me she was with Ferrets....I'm so thankful I live in the country and my traitor has an underpinning so they really like to get under there and play. Thor got out this morning for a hour, then came and let me know he wanted back in..there something else...sneaky thing..lol thank you for the info...I fell lost at times with all this, but the good news is that Loki ate last night chicken meat too. so I guess I'm getting somewhere with them...

You're making progress. Remember to hang in there and just keep on trying with them. Some fuzzies can be stubborn little things sometimes, but patience and persistence tend to persevere in the end. A little head's up before your vet visit, try to keep the raw diet on the low-down. Sadly, most vets are given only a very basic nutritional education, which is paid for by the kibble companies, and the only real other times these vets get to deal with a raw diet is when someone was feeding their animals an UNBALANCED raw diet which in time lead to health problems the vet then had to fix. Some vets will understand and you can even find some pro-raw vets, but you can also find the frankly rude vets who will refuse to properly diagnose any problems the ferret might have and just blame everything on raw.

Thank you Linda M...that's crazy...just about like our foods..does a dr ever ask you about your life style? lol....I'm glad you told me, I was unable to go last Friday due to Loki getting out and not come in til dark, little bugger. I have been struggling with my bail duck being painful so I have not been on for a bit...It's getting better, boy do I know how important it is to eat healthy...I did not start the wings yet but I have both Loki and Thor eating chicken 2 times a day with what I'm supost to mix with it and egg on Sunday...there poo was not good at all at first but now it's doing much better and it did take a while..I let them eat kebble too, wysong starch free one...I need to add another if I don't go totally raw...and I haven't decided yet, would you know what should be my second choose since this food it 5% carb...I need less on the next one...I was going to ask the vet about food but maybe I shouldn't...I'm taking them tomorrow...sorry I wasn't on here a week...been so much in pain, but it's getting better...thanks so much

I hope the vet trip goes well. Sorry that I haven't responded on here, I was going to yesterday, but things have been super hectic around here since our ferret room got flooded on Sunday and we're still dealing with resolving all that. I'm so glad your Loki came back home, little stinker. It can really help to let the little buggers show you how they circumvent certain ferret proofing methods, so you can adjust them to be better proofed.
Should I ever recommend a kibble, I'd recommend Orijen. But I feel at this stage I'm well past recommending kibbles, I haven't had a kibble in my home since I switched my ferrets and cat over to raw, and I plan on never having any in my home again. I originally switched to doing partial raw and partial kibble, but I found it to be a big headache and a lot of precautions you need to take to keep things balanced and not upset stomachs, and I ended up switching to raw completely to ease that for me and benefit the ferrets more. And it really, really did.
On what stage of the switch are your fuzzies currently? Soup stage with slivers or completely small slivers?

The vet visit was great, Loki and Thor was wonderful and never tried to bite at all...there very healthy, I took a yurn spec. for Thor back today to be checked, he leaves strems of pee latley...so I wanted that checked, the vet all so said that he had a small bladder...I ask the vet what he thought about going raw with them, he replyed that the selmelo was not worth the risk to people...Thor and Loci have not been out since the shot except to lay around and look at me and then go back to there draws....and I can tell that they may have a little fevor....Sorry to hear about your flood I would help if I were close...let me know what your thoughts are on the vet and what he said and the fuzzys actions...have a great night ..

I'm happy to hear the vet visit went okay. So wait, the vet was saying it's not worth the risk to humans to do raw for the ferrets? Were they touting the risks of Salmonella and E.Coli? Because I have one response to that and only one.. In about 2yrs of doing raw for my lot, my husband only had one bout of Salmonella, and guess what caused it, a Jimmy John's sub sandwich (thank you veggies)! Ferrets have a digestive time of 3-4 hours, while things like Salmonella need 12-72 hours to incubate. holisticferretforum.com/natural-diet/raw-diet-the-meat-of-the-site/raw-feeding-myths/holisticferretforum.com/natural-diet/truth-about-diet/bacteria-and-raw-feeding/You're not planning on eating their poop, right? And you know how to do basic kitchen hygiene when handling meats? Then you'll be fine. Please keep an eye on them to see if they were maybe just tired after the vet visit (mine like to sulk about a little after vet visits). Are they eating and drinking normally? Have you had any scary-looking poops since the vet visit? Sometimes adverse reactions to the vaccine can occur, even delayed reactions that can require you to contact the vet or get them back there ASAP. I'm gonna link the poop-chart here, there's an example of vaccine reaction poops near the end. docs.google.com/document/d/16e-Ir6cjH9Kstg96axaEdoER9nWc9W5riVmD39m-zhk
