Hey everyone! I wanted some feedback and advice from you all for starting my furbabies transition to a Frankenprey diet. Eventually I'd like to start in the mentor program, but I'm still getting all the material together.
My main question is how much of everything did you buy initially starting out? I have all the pricing for everything figured out and am pretty confident in my list of available butchers and suppliers in my area, but I was wondering how much bone-in/muscle meat/heart/organs I should buy just to start out with (both my guys are still completely on kibble). Should I buy a pound of each thing, multiple pounds, or just a few ounces? I'd like to at least have a couple weeks worth of stuff at a time for the soup stage.
Also, do you all have any recommendations on meat choices? I can get a steady supply of chicken, turkey, beef, and pork year-round. However, venison, lamb, and rabbit could be a viable option for me as well, but they may not be as available year-round. I'd have to buy lamb and rabbit in bulk, which I'd be fine with once they're completely transitioned, and my grandpa is a big hunter so I could get a good supply of venison for free, but not sure if it'd last hunting season to hunting season. Would it hurt my ferrets if I give them venison, lamb, and rabbit when it's available (and if they'll eat it) or should I not introduce it since it wouldn't be 100% guaranteed (more like 70-75% guaranteed)?
Additionally, I was wondering how big of freezers you all store your meat in. I'm 19 and still living at home with my family, and they completely support this transition, but space is limited. I'm the only one that takes care of the fuzzbutts so they're always in my room (unless I take them elsewhere). I was looking at 1.1 cubic feet freezers to keep the meat in for my room, but I didn't know if these may be too small to fit everything, especially if I buy weeks worth of supply. I was hoping starting out though that that size freezer would be fine until I can save up for a bigger freezer to keep some of the meat in the basement, and then keep a week or so worth of my pre-portioned meat in my room. If need be, I'm sure I can store some of the meat in my refrigerator/freezer that's currently in our basement and the one in our kitchen, but I'm trying to keep everything easy and mess-free for the rest of the family.
Thank you so much in advance! I'm extremely excited to start giving my furbabies the diet they'll thrive on!!
