Lately Momo and Appa seem to be sleeping more often. Playtime is only 10 minutes now and their usual crazy random play has turned into them making themselves comfy in alternative spots to take small naps. Or they follow me so I try to engage in play and grab the jingley cat toys they used to love but they still seem unamused. I was looking at the rescue remedy and it helps with depression. I'm not sure exactly that they're depressed but would it hurt to add this stuff into their soup or water?
My understanding of rescue remedy is that it's used in the short term in times of stress, like a new ferret in the business, or a new house, or the death of a friend. I don't think it's used as an ongoing supplement.
Is it possible that they're bored? Do you rotate toys so that they have "new" things to look at and play with? Or maybe they're just getting older? Although it seems strange that they would both slow down at the same time, I don't know.
No, rescue remedy is just that for intense negative or overwhelming emotional distress. It's not for depression such as boredom. How much time are they out of cage for? Have they had a medical recently? For ferrets who've been healthy and happy and then suddenly start to sleep all the time I would be concerned but more from a medical point of view. Try offering more stimulation and see if that helps. Otherwise, see if their enthusiasm over eating has waned, stools are normal, are they urinating more. ciao
Momo has insulinoma and ever since got the desimplant hes been a grandpa, which would most of the time be annoyed when Appa would want to play but would still dook around and wrestle with toys. He seems to want to lay down for a while after his pred and he def sleeps more often. He's 6. Now Appa is showing the same tiredness but maybe his is more on the boredom side. He still follows Mo but doesn't antagonize his so much anymore, he just lays with him. I have them free roam my room and I have tunnels, cat trees, boxes and egg boxes in the room but it seems with every new toy they out due it the first day and toss it to the side lol. spoiled children. I open their space three times a day for 15-20 mins each (because they fall asleep between this time in one of the other rooms) and the space includes a long hallway and two rooms filled with toys. I got a ferret backpack as a gift so I'm hoping they'll both be okay in it for an adventure to the park. I think they need some sunshine. My room doesn't get the best light so maybe some fresh air will be good. Poops and urine are normal.
When is the last time you checked his BG? Adrenal artificially increases blood sugars, so once brought under control the BG drops again.
Ferrets: Contessa Kitties: Watson, Oskar DIP Sinnead, Vincent, Boris, Zeus and Athena, Willow, Mr. Frodo, Indie, Lucrezia, Judge, Odin, Miss Emily, Suki, Cody, Aristotle, Butterscotch, Frankenfurter. RIP Herne, Ligeia, and Mr. Stubbs
Why was this not brought up in our mentoring thread? Of course I agree with heather, RR is for short term stressors, I believe it is more out of boredom than depression. The more out time they get they calmer they are all the time. I do not often have time to browse through all the threads here or on Facebook so if you do not post it in our thread I may miss a vital part of what is going on. I do my best to check in at least once a day.
Sorry, I didn't see these comments! FireAngel, I have mentioned it in our thread. Appas a chewer, possibly coming from boredom but we chucked it up to his teeth needing to be cleaned which he’s still chewing on things after the terrible anesthesia experience. But when I mentioned those things they were included in a larger paragraph with different details of their life and diet so they were’t brought up in your replies. I know I give you a lot in every reply since everyday it's something new with these guys so I can see why things can get overlooked so I create other threads for quick help and also different advice. Everyone brings new things to the table is how I see it. Lately the replies have been a few days in between so maybe you’re missing comments on our thread. I’ll start liking your previous post and also re ask specific questions that are missed. I just get worried and don't want to chance any wait in case this is rooting from something that can be prevented.
Sherry, his BG is pulling 180 and I just checked it on sunday. I’ve noticed last night he’s wobbling his head even after he takes his prednisolone. He's not doing it this morning. I'm sorry if I'm not getting this right but you're saying once adrenal is under control the bg drops? He’s had the implant in for a few months now. How long does it usually take to balance out?
Luckily Appa is getting his spunk back but Momo is the same. He has a vet visit this weekend. update: This just happened.. Appa's eating well with the soup but last night the ate the quail wing in large bites. Hes done this before and was fine but just now he peed on the puppy pad and ran to the rug where he licks himself after he pees and I heard what sounded like a fart so I lifted him up to wipe his stomach down and he had a small goop of yellow mucus-y diarrhea on his tail. It was somewhat bubbly too. Should I be worried? Other than that he's acting more normal than last week and eating well. They did just get salmon oil with their teeth brushing yesterday too.
