UPDATE
Sadly baby Snow passed away today. The vet said she was to far gone.
As heart broken I am now, I know my little darling is not in pain anymore.
Hi guys
I got my first kit ferret on Saturday. Fell madly in love with her. Sadly today at the vet appointment my vet informed me my little fuzz kit has rickets.
I was told to feed her kitten food plus some meds they gave me.
She does not want to eat the kitten food.
Any insight on rickets in little babes like this would be appreciated?! She is 9 weeks old
Baby Snow stole my heart and i want to give her the best shot at life i can

Am just doing this from my memory of things I have read on this without checking if my memory is serving me well but..
my understanding is that rickets basically stems from an insufficiency of calcium either during the gestation period or after birth or both. Essentially neither the mother or kits were fed a diet with enough calcium, so your first step is usually to ensure this deficiency is corrected. Also there are exercises to help ensure any mobility problems are addressed.
I don't know where you are but rickets and swimmers are related and the terminology is often used interchangeably depending on location. search on both and it may help you.
That's about all my memory is throwing up at this point. Hope it gives you a starting point to ensure baby Snow has the best life she can.

Swimmers is the same thing, just a different name. She needs higher doses of calcium to make up for what she missed. Best bet is full on raw diet, heavy on the bone. Heather do you recall the protocol either Phaedra or Kristy used? Ingeb if you are on fb I can put you in touch with someone who regularly deals with swimmer's babies quite successfully.

Certainly pointing me in the right direction. Just put her back to bed after her 3AM feed. For such a little babe she is hard work 🙂😍😘 Thank you again

I don't remember, the best bet would be to contact Kristy or Robert and or definitely Phae. All 3 have had remarkable success in dealing with swimmers. Kristy and Robert also have a physio or water therapy program for their wee swimmers too ciao

Your baby Snow sounds adorable. I'm glad you're taking good care of her. I think rickets is fixable in a kit that young. Here's a thread where someone else had the same problem, complete with before and after videos: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/15823/hind-leg-weakeness-baby-ferretAnd here's some of the more relevant info (from Phae) from that thread: Good luck and keep us updated!

While my knowledge of swimmers is purely from others experiences, being in Australia too, I am willing to do what I can regarding any aussie stuff. It's a big brown land so we may be a long way apart but having been a ferrent 20 years I do know how local things and overseas stuff translates, plus I also know some ferrents in parts of Aus other than my own.
Hopefully Snow will do well with you addressing things so quickly.

Just saw that there was an update to the beginning post. I am so sorry that you lost Snow. Ferrets grab hold of your heart so quickly. May the brief time you got to spend together become something you can treasure without it being overwhelmed by the anguish of her passing

I"m so sorry. To loose a baby is heartbreaking and tears as the soul. The wee swimmers kits often have other issues (calcium isn't just about bones) that are not so apparent A travelling candle is lit for the wee adventurer. Gentle journey little shooting star. Fly high and free, visit often ciao

Thank you everyone for the kind words. It certainly has not been the easiest week. I picked Baby Snow's ashes up today. She is forever with me.
