1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
My ferrets originally were sold in a garden centre. I was told that ferrets ate kibble. Then, after having adopted them, I read a lot on various websites and Facebook groups. Reading that eating kibble can lead them to develop insulinoma, among other cancers, has frightened me. At the same time, switching to raw is a movement that I have already done for my dogs.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I would like assistance in switching to at least a raw diet with at least three different sources of proteins. I have bought preys for them, but my two kits are currently not interested.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
I want to give a chance to my ferrets to live as much as this species can, and this requires to offer them a suitable diet, manage the photoperiod, implant them and love them (they free roam, so I don't mention it). I do not want to trigger any kind of cancer that I can avoid through my decisions. Nature will already be hard enough. I love my girls and they love their home.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It requires a commitment of several months at minimum. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. The switch takes time and effort every single day. It can also be extremely frustrating at times. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc), or limited time due to work, then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing and realistically able to make the necessary time commitment?
Since I have started to organise their switch, I offer them the best pieces of chicken, and I spend the necessary time to prepare the soupy and to feed them. It is very frustrating to observe that they don't like the food they should eat if they were in the wild. Since I have bought a brand of kibble more suitable to their needs, they don't want to eat it either. They want to stick to Carnivore Care, that I only give to them in the evening, to push them to consider raw meat as a meal option.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? If so, what medications are they currently on? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have two ferrets, Vanille and Zoé. Both are 5,5 month old and are real sisters. Females.
When they arrived home, they had an ECE: they are now back to health. To make sure that they would eat, as I was already trying to switch them to a healthier food diet, my vet told me that they should eat Carnivore Care.
I adopted Vanille and Zoé seven weeks ago. They are my first ferrets ever. Weight: Vanille 700 grams and Zoé 650 grams.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc) Do they already eat some form of soup?
Mix of "Instinct Ultimate Protein" and "Wysong" kibbles, "Bandit" treats. used to give them "Ferreton", but not doing that any more
No treat
barf plus barf powder prepared with warm water to make a soup
ground chicken plus liver plus hears plus egg shell plus warm water to make a soup
Carnivore Care
Kibble: les recettes de Daniel, but they don't really eat it
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
They hardly eat the soup. They refused rabbit and beef. They didn't touch the preys.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
The ferrets seem to be completely integrated in the family. They interact with the dogs and the family.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Every day
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
I will do it here, and have already posted several pictures of Vanille and Zoé on the FB group.
11. Do you have a scale sufficient to measure soup ingredients AND to regularly weigh your ferrets?
Yes
12. Have you met the requirements for this program? Are you at least 18 years of age? Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc?
Yes, I am fully ready, as I have already been following the guidance given on this website.
13. Do you understand that if your mentor or an admin recommends seeking veterinary care and you refuse to seek appropriate care you may be dropped from the mentoring program?
Believe me, Vanille and Zoé have two vets and they are properly followed.
14. We occasionally have a wait for a Mentor to be available. While you wait we encourage you to get started by creating your own switching thread under Diet Transitions where all of our mentors and members can help you while you wait for your personal mentor.
