I’ve just switched over to getting some of the fertles’ meat from a new supplier and they do a minced duck that’s 30-40% bone (but cheap and a red meat!) I normally try to aim at 10% bone average over the week - can anyone help me with the maths? I hate maths.
The re-jigged meal plan runs as follows:
Monday am - duck hearts
Monday pm - duck mince plus ?
Tuesday am - chicken wings
Tuesday pm - rabbit chunks (home-grown domestic rabbit, skinned and gutted then chopped into chunks, bone and all)
Wednesday am - day-old chick each plus minced whole wild rabbit (fur, guts and all)
Wednesday pm - mixed offal
Thursday am - duck hearts
Thursday pm - chicken and rabbit mince (commercial bone-in grind)
Friday am - chicken wings
Friday pm - duck mince plus ?
Saturday am - large mice (varies according to appetite/size)
Saturday pm - rabbit chunks
Sunday am - 2 quail eggs per ferret, raw
Sunday pm - chicken and liver mince (commercial bone-in grind).
The duck hearts obviously count as a muscle and not a bone-in meal. The offal is a commercial mixed-species anything-that-secretes mix, though they sometimes get a bit extra by way of rabbit kidneys/liver/lungs/heart if I’m slaughtering bunnies, there’s about 10% offal in the wild rabbit mince and there’s 10% liver in the chicken and liver commercial grind too. All meals are around 525g split between 8 ferrets, but some big ferrets eat more mice than small ferrets on mouse days.
If I mix a pure muscle mince (I get some minced beef and minced lamb for my dogs) with the bone-heavy duck mince, that should bring the 30%-40% down a bit and push up the red meat proportion a little. The question is, can I just do a straight 25% bone-heavy duck and 75% pure beef/lamb mix and will that be about right on the bone % overall?
Any other suggestions with the diet warmly welcomed, also. I agonise for days getting their diets right again every time I change anything!
