Oils?

I know salmon oil is the main oil people use to give their ferrets an oil treat, and I know other use cod liver oil too. Personally I use coconut oil because I can't find salmon oil anywhere near me p, I only use it for nail clipping though which is once every 2 weeks... But I have recently brought some cod liver oil for them and now I'm just wondering, how much cod liver oil can ferrets have? So far I've only let them have a few drops betwe the 11 of them. Also are there any other oils that could be used as healthy ferret treats? Other than salmon oil which I still haven't found any in stores around where I live yet, cod liver oil or coconut oil which I have both of that the moment. I think it'd be nice to give them a variety of oils for a treat once a week which is why I'm asking.

Cod liver oil is a rather big no no....Too much Vit A. Coconut oil does absolutely nothing for the ferrets as it's a vegetable oil. Salmon, herring are a couple of the ones commonly used. ciao

I've heard they can get an too much vitamin A from cod liver oil which is why I only gave them a few drops between them, didn't want to make them ill but was never told that it shouldn't be used until just now Heather. And I know coconut oil doesn't do anything for them but heard good reviews on it for ferrets as in not harmful to them which is why I've been using it as I can't get salmon oil from any pet shops near me but I'll keep my eyes open for the herring oil and I'll ask my local pet shop owner if he can order some salmon oil in since he has a good reputation for getting products in that aren't always available in other pet shops.

I've used cod liver oil many years ago but if you're feeding raw properly you're already feeding the upper end of the Vit A and if you're feeding kibble it's an additive and who knows what their calculations are (barest minimum I would think but....you don't know). As far as salmon oil, even the human oil can be used (it's messy). You just poke a hole in the capsule and squeeze...of course you come out of the deal smelling like an over ripe salmon but the ferrets love you more ciao

I can imagine one of my rescue jills would try and attach herself to my hand if I ended up smelling like a salmon lol she already bites as it is.... She has fear aggression due to not being handled properly by her previous owner or often enough for that matter, but she's coming around slowly and has stopped latching on now, just does hard nipping now. Think she'll stop biting altogether in a couple of months
