One thing I do is pick them apart and make sure they are passing whatever hair they swallow. If you don't see little clumps of fur every so often, lube them up because most likely that sucker is working on a nice hairball.

Generally year round, especially if you have other pets. But much more intensive during shedding season.

when is the shedding season?? I though it was over, but Neka sheds A TON but that could be a late effect of surgery?

It is from his surgery. Normal shedding season depends on the light outside. When the days start to really shorten, winter appetites and coats come in. Opposite, of course, for when the days start lengthening. So generally, starting around October, and Feb. Mar? At least for mine. It will also vary according to what your latitude is.
