So I just wanted to get some opinions on this whole chicken necks freeze dried item i stumbled upon - link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007TKTPAU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A1LTJ2413NFTWQ&psc=1I didn't see any preservatives or anything that sent up a red flag. So my question is this. For storage purposes (little freezer) does anyone use freeze dried organs and necks? If so, do you always re-hydrate them or feed them as is? Just wondering. Thank you for any information. Also sorry if this topic has been discussed I wasn't finding anything in the archives but may have been doing it wrong.

I'm not too sure about necks but I give my fuzzies freeze dried hearts once a week! My friend just got them Turkey Fries (testies- I didn't know what they were lol) and my 2 didn't even want to lick it. Does anyone have a take on those?

I give FDR hearts and testicles as treats, not a lot and not often though. I don't rehydrate these. If giving any FDR for the purpose of food/a meal, then please rehydrate.
As for the FDR bone-in pieces like the necks, I'm unsure. I was going to try some in the coming month myself though. My lot do nibble on FDR duck feet, I check poops to make sure they don't get too dry or risk any constipation.

I just switched my ferrets to the Raw diet but I've been giving them freeze dried hearts for some time now. Would you say that they were still getting their taurine via FDH? Curious because I can't get them to eat anything containing raw hearts without syringe feeding them.

They'll still get Taurine through the FDR hearts, but my concern there is how to know how much to be feeding them when it's dry like that. You cannot feed too much of FDR, dry as-is. It really is only ever meant as a small treat once in a while dry, for food it really has to be rehydrated.
Because they are FDR, they lack moisture, which provides weight, which otherwise gives you an accurate amount to use when giving meals. Remember, in the weekly menu, we work out the amount to give of a percentage by knowing a ferret's average amount eaten. For example, Athena eats 1oz per meal.. on a full Frankenprey menu she needs 1.5 meals of heart, thus in the week she would eat 1.5oz of heart total. So how do you know how much of the FDR to give, when you cannot gauge the amount by weight?

Thank you, the listing on amazon gave good instructions to rehydrate and figured that would be a good way to go for part of his meal plan. And i see what you are saying about gauging the amount, makes total sense. I think I will buy this and the chicken hearts they also had to add for treats as FDR and meals once it is rehydrated. Thank you all for your input! The FDR will def help with my small freezer storage. (I need to get me a deep chest freezer!) Save
