Hey you guys,
I was thinking on breeding rats again to fill in some meal gaps and wanted to know if it was cheaper just to get a order of rodent pro or spend the 10 a month on food and such to breed a handfull of rats.
When I bred before, I sold some extras and fed a few every week. My only thought was the smell but than it may of been just the mice. I would need to get a new cage and a thing of food mixed but it shouldn't be too big of a hassle.
If smell is a problem, how did you deal with it?

Cost wise it's going to depend on how many you are producing and what your costs are, rodent pro is slightly more expensive than breeding my own mice, but because I order all my other prey from them, adding mice to the order would mean I'd need to order a lot more and would be more $$ overall. Plus I'm selling some now which helps a lot. But compared to when I was buying them locally it is much cheaper.
Smell, I use wood pellets and put arm and hammer in the bottom of the cages and clean a lot, I didn't find the vanilla in the water trick to help very much. Big thing is cleaning often and taking out their garbage waste that day, if you let that sit around it reeks!

Keeping rodent smell in check:
Use Equine pine pellets as substrate, toilet tissue for bedding, toilet paper tubes for hiding, scoop out waste spots a couple times a week, feed only natural foods, completely clean tank once a month, use an air cleaner in the room with the mice, and a couple Citrus Magic air fresheners.
