Hello everyone, I haven't been around in a while!
A few days ago I added two new ferrets to my family. Kaiju, my ferret, took to them immediately and the three are already very happy together. Kaiju is raw fed and has been from the start, he's on a 100% whole prey diet, Moe and Mako, however, have been kibble fed their entire lives (no fault of their momma's, she tried very hard to get them to eat some raw whenever she had the time). All three are the same age, around 8 months old.
Right now I have two bowls set up, one with moistened kibble in it for Mako and Moe, and Kaiju's bowl which currently has two mouse butts in it (lol). Kaiju sniffs the kibble but has no interest beyond "what'cha guys eating?" He loves his raw! Mako and Moe have both thoroughly sniffed Kaiju's whole prey and have accepted a few licks of raw egg.
This is my second full day with them. I haven't had to transition a ferret before (I started Kaiju when he was just a baby), so this is a new experience for me.
My Goal: Have all three ferrets eating whole prey.
The Ferrets:
Kaiju - male (gib)
~3 pounds, muscle machine
Black Sable
Whole Prey
Moe - male (gib)
~4 pounds, currently too chunky for my liking (he likes to eat...a lot...lol)
Cinnamon mitt
Kibble plus raw chicken (the only meat he likes so far haha)
Mako/Kara - female (jill)
~1.8 pounds, fairly healthy fat-to-muscle ration from what I can tell
Chocolate blaze
Kibble
So in this thread I'll be documenting my transition.
Day 2
I'll be adding water to the kibble to make it nice and soft, they like this very much. I plan to start adding in things amid the mush, just a tiny bit at a time, to see if I can get them to try new flavors/textures without entirely realizing it. I'll start w/ mince chicken muscle since that is what Moe is already fond of.
I put the mush down and Moe and Mako raaaaan over to dig in. Kaiju checked out their food, licked some, then shook his head, grabbed a mouse butt, and scuttled off to eat that instead ("Ah, now this is real food!")
