Hi everyone! I was wondering wether the Kaytee ferret cage would make an ok temporary/travel cage? It would be for a single ferret and her "real" cage would be a ferret nation (two level). And free roam as much as possible. This is the temp cage I'm thinking of petvalu.com/product/1500758/multi-level-ferret-home-kayteeThanks!

Are you wanting to set it up like at someone's house that you r visiting while on vacation (travel)? I used an eleven panel Marshall Farm playpen at my sister's to house my ferrets(would not advise it though if there are dogs around). www.ferret.com/item/marshall-ferret-playpen-11-panel/650889/Here is super pet n play ---no shipping. A pickup from Walmart, it is only 8 panels. Might need 2--I have one and it connects to Marshall's playpen. www.walmart.com/ip/Super-Pet-Pet-N-Playpen/14100902I temporarily raised my baby ferret in a playpen because she was attacked by older female---it did well for me(no dogs or cats in the house though). I drove 10 hrs to Florida with one of these in back of small suv with a hammock and another type of hanging sleeper in it. www.petsupplies.com/item/ferret-nation-habitat-model-183-add-on-unit/650432/?srccode=GPPETSUP&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwqXMBRCDARIsAD-Considerations for both cages: A lot wide open spaces for ferret to fall---- but if your are good at arranging hammocks..... They both have horizontal bars and ferrets will probably climb the outside of cage. (I do like the critterware better) If you are trying to save up for Ferret Nation---I would use a playpen. Also I would find a large carrier for just transporting ferrets Maybe someone else has better suggestions.

I've used the Kaytee cage and the other one...don't waste your money. If she will stay in the marshals playpen then go for that. I use the 11 panel....or go for a single level cage. This is the one I use for transportation. petvalu.com/product/1500757/rabbit-home-kaytee. It's big enough for a litter box, a hammy or cube and a snuggle bed (this is not a suggestion for a "living in cage"). I use mine (I have a couple, they came with rescues)for transportation and for hospital caging. I've got one that is larger than this for a hospital cage. It's hooked up to a steam tent unit and it works amazingly for respiratory and ill ferrets. The only thing I've had to do to modify is a lock on the door (a simple clasp works, I've got a couple of boys who are escape artists) and I've put ties to the bottom to the cage (more for security than actual purpose). Cleaning is really simple, unlatch top from bottom clean and set up. A bit annoying maybe but certainly not as frustrating as trying to clean and set up those stupid Kaytee cages and a lot safer. The one Kaytee cage had a gap in the one rung...sounds simple, who cares.....little sprites care, they can squeeze out. The ramps are brittle and unsafe for ferrets, and much too slippery and narrow, the shelves too narrow and the cage too high. I think it was designed with rats or small rodents in mind. The doors are located in stupid areas so that you've got to be a contortionist to set it up and if the ferrets poop any where but the litter box cleaning it requires the same circus stunts as setting up hammies. I've had both types of cages turned in with rescues and took them both to the dump so that (a) I never had to use them again or (b) they wouldn't accidentally find their way into the hands of unsuspecting owners. ciao

Thank you so much! This helps a lot! Whatever we choose would definitely be a temporary set up for visiting people and things like that. I like the look of the FN extension cage but wasn't sure if it was secure as a stand alone? Definitely looking into play pens anyways just for extra play time (hopefully connected to the big FN?) Thanks again!

For simplicity sake I called it 183 add-on. I wished I had went on to explain that it was 181 that hubby took a sawsaw to and cut off legs. My Abbey had a torn Acl and could not walk up ladders at one time. I did call them(800-428-8560), and they said 183 would not have support at the bottom. Unless someone else has tried this--might need to not purchase as a stand alone cage. Sorry----I did not think of this until your last post. 181 and 183 r put together here. www.midwesthomes4pets.com/data/uploads/FN-183-INST-126.pdf
