Try giving him a sleeping den. An enclosed box with one hole to get in and out of. It gives a feeling of security. He may simply be feeling vulnerable, and the high sides of the litter box give a form of security.

I don't know why that didn't occur to me. I'll make one now since I'm up with him anyways (more sneezing blood). I'm going to see if I can get him some X-ray's tomorrow. Thank you so much!

Thank you. Made his sleeping den and put him in it once I got him to sleep, I hope it makes him feel safer.

At the Er vet now. Bandit coughed blood and had a sneezing/screaming fit today. Getting X-ray's now because the vet said his lungs sound good. I guess I'll know soon enough if it's cancer.

I have to put him down. He has a very swollen spleen and low platelets causing the bleeding. No pneumonia, the heavy breathing is from pain. I was told I could take him home but to bring him back between now and Monday to let him go.

Oh sweetie.. I am so sorry to hear that. Poor sweet boy.. My heart goes out to you and your family during this difficult time. I dunno, maybe one of the others here on the forum has dealt with this before with a more favorable outcome... but I dunno. Heather? If you indeed do need to help him cross the Bridge, there's a few things to keep in mind for afterwards. You may wish to let your other ferrets say goodbye to him as well, by letting them see his body afterwards, this helps their grieving and healing process. They do not understand if their friend just disappears, but they do understand when they get to see and say goodbye. Some Rescue Remedy given at this time, will also help them in this hard time and you may need to keep a close eye on any who have bonded strongly with him, just in case they spiral into depression. And while Rescue Remedy may not work for you during this time, you can always message me if you need someone to talk to. I am truly sorry to hear about all of this.

Thank you both. I will order the rescue remedy tonight. I'm thinking of taking them all with me then asking to be left alone with them after he is put down. I'm scared to do this, I don't want to upset my others.
I'm struggling with ending his life. He ate today when he got home and that confuses me. Maybe some eat up until the end? I'm now worried if I wait too long his spleen will rupture. I'm so confused.

I really wish I could help ease that confusion, but I've never been through this particular situation with any of my own before. I'm gonna tag some of the other admins too, just in case any of them might be able to offer some advice or information on the best coarse of action right now. katt, Sherry, unclejoe

Am I correct in thinking that ferrets can live with their spleens removed? If his spleen is the only problem, I'm curious why the vet wouldn't talk about spleen removal. I'm not judging or anything- I just genuinely want to know since I don't know much about spleen problems. Anyway, I am so sorry that you are going through this with your fuzz. I hope that in the end he is relieved from his pain.

Thank you for tagging more help again, I'm a mess. Bandit is somewhere around 6 or 7 and he has been sick and slowly declining for a solid two months now. The vet believes he has lymphoma and that he is far beyond surgery. I don't want to put him through that anyways because he has been through so much recently. He also has a nice sized tumor on his pancreas. Today he coughed blood all over me so I rushed him in. His quality of life is fading fast so to put him through more just to gain a few weeks or a month (according to vet) does not seem fair. But it's hard to handle these decisions because I want to be selfish

I see. Poor fuzz. It can be hard to decide when to let them go.
