I have been feeding my ferrets these 6 to 8 oz white rats. I clean and skin them, and they smell just fine. However, my Annabelle got sick pretty quick after eating one. I do not if she upchucked it or if it was pooh. The pooh or vomit had the most rotten smell. She was heaving pretty quickly after eating it. I ran for pops to check on her---(would never make being a doc), so I missed whether she vomited the first stuff. The other stuff on the floor could have been pooh---but she is pretty good about going to potties. She could have been too sick to care though. She did not feel well until next day, so now I am going to discard the rest of the batch. Also, my blaze has been getting strange poohs, but vet saw no bacteria overload. She did two kind of fecal tests on her and wanted to do a salmonella or ecoli. What turned me off about that was that it would be sent off to a lab and may not show true---$180. However if this continues I will do it. But I have held off on the rats, and they seem to be doing better. I have bought a few cartons of quail eggs from farmers market that they have been eating too.( ?) Gosh, you have to almost raise your own stuff. Rats will be thrown out for sure---will rethink the quail eggs.

I hope your mieces get better. I can't say from experience, never fed mine whole prey, they will even urk if I don't rinse off the quail before serving it to them. Is $180 a standard lab work price? This vet has been gouging me with estimates like $550 for bloodwork, fecal testing, ultrasound, each.

I got them from Perfect Prey. www.perfectprey.com/They really look nice and clean so I am a little stumped. Ferrets have been fighting fleas. I wonder if that could make them sick. I have given up on trying to contain the fleas and will be getting house bombed:/ Going tomorrow for another bout of Revolution. Going to ask vet in morning if they could have tapeworms. My thinking is going in every direction right now.

My thinking is going in every direction right now. They can get parasites if they ingest any fleas, like tapeworms. If all the pets in your home are treated for 3-4 months that is enough time for all the fleas to die out. Sprinkling diatomaceous earth on the carpet will also kill any eggs and larvae. I switched away from Revolution as I found that fleas were building a resistance to it and it would only be effective for a couple of weeks rather than a full month. I use Advantage Multi for Cats now and it works so much better.

Lyles $200-400 on ultrasounds. My vet says tech does not usually charge the full $400 for ferrets. i just asked about that the last visit.
Vet fee---if first time with ferret--- 120.00 If regular patient ---70.00 then add the fecal, which is checked right there under microscope. I will try to find my paperwork to get exact price for the fecals(they should not be much).
Is your vet an Exotic? Does sound like your are being an charged an awful lot. I would try to find another vet if possible. My vet is Lauren Powers(exotic)

My vet said we could get three doses out of revolution for cats 5lbs-15lbs. each vial has 75mL, so thats 25mL per ferret. Maybe that can help you calculate?

Lyles, I checked on the fecal test prices---vet said $20-30 So with the regular visit cost, it should not run $500 :///
$180 was to check for salmonella and ecoli that would be sent off ( a special lab work).

I do not know if they used the 5-15lb of Revolution. She used 3 doses out of 2 vials.
She told me today the clinic was involved in the trial that tested the multi-cat Advantage. It has two chemicals in it whereas Revolution has one.

What I recommend is this: Look at the weight on the package it's for, use the lowest weight stated. Weigh your ferret. Let's say your ferret is 2 pounds, and it's for cats 5lbs. That's 2 1/2 times that 2 goes into five. Look at how much mL is in each vial.. thats 2 1/2 doses per vial.
lowest stated weight/ferrets weight = x mL/x = amount mL per ferret
