lastnight i heard some strange sounds from henrys cage looked over and he was rolling around stiff as a board frothy mouth and excessive drooling my net was down so i called my sister and woke her up to have her look it up all we could find was a siezure but they say they are only caused by insulinoma what do i do? I have a call intot he vet but now the idiots have lost his file and dont recognize him as a patient! I have one more vet in the area i found recently that will take a ferret so i will be calling them in the morning if theother vet doesnt call back. I was so scared i thought he was dieing. Only thing i can figure is he crashed because the baby had dumped a bunch of life cereal in his pen so add intot he fact that it is chock full of icky stuff for ferrets it is massive carbs and has sugar sprinkled on it so he spiked and the crashed scared me to death about the time we figured out what it was he had come out of it on his own. So i gavce him some pumpkin and baby meats mixed together and he ate it and slept fed him more pumpkin and some duck today but he isnt interested in it so i may just give him some more baby meat he just sems worn out today. I think i need a hug. Add this into normal everyday problems of a pregnant mama with a preschooler and a toddler i am worn out today

You need to get your boy to the vet asap. It does sound like a seizure but .... it sounds like it could be something toxic as well. Is your little one insulonomic? There are a number of things that cause seizures and low blood sugar is only one. Seizures are indeed very scary. They do often appear a bit "off" for the next 24 hrs but it also means that they can go into another one if you don't have the proper medications to control them. ciao

I agree with Heather, you need to bring your fuzz to the vet to be seen.

I've never had a ferret have a seizure, but I know how scary they can be for us pet owners. When we first got our puppy in December she had a seizure the following morning after getting her! I had let her sleep on the couch with me, and she woke me up frothing and jerking, just like your ferret. Best thing you can do is keep their mouth clear. We later found out she was not getting enough blood sugar, as she was not weaned (her previous owner had tossed all her dog's puppies out in the snow and a neighbor rescued them) It was a trying week to ratio out pancake syrup into evaporated milk. We had rushed her to a vet that wanted a deposit before doing anything! They were going to hook her up to an IV, the whole 9 yards. I knew I couldn't afford anything like that, and the second vet we called just told us to give her sugar. Sometimes it can be tricky finding a good vet that cares more about the animal than the money. I hope you get it all figured out The road blocks can be trying sometimes

Honestly, I don't think that eating sugary cereal one time will cause a ferret to crash/become insulinomic. It's my impression that insulinoma develops over time, most likely caused by feeding grain-laden food. I agree, this baby needs to see a vet, and get a blood glucose test done. I recently lost one of my furkids to this illness, and it is hard to see them like that. If he starts to seize again, rub Karo syrup on his gums. This will bring him out of it. Keep feeding meat baby food often until you can get him into the vets. If he won't take it, then mix it with water and syringe feed him. The protein and frequent feeding will help keep him stabilized. Hope Henry will be ok! And good luck!

he is doing great. I called the other vet he said to just keep food in the cage and bring him in in a week when they have an opening. SO thats what i am doing if it happens again they have an emergency on-call dr so i can call him!

Make sure to keep baby food of some sort(or even better, soupies), along with some sort of syrup(karo, corn syrup, etc). If he's insulinomic, he'll need both of those. You may have to syringe the baby food/soup.
