Yesterday I found out one of my ferrets, Ghost is anemic. The vet said his red blood count was 16 when its supposed to be 50 or 60. Today is day two of vitamins (Pet Tinic), and he seems to be doing a TAD better. Still sleeping and not playing, but I hope to god he starts to feel better soon. Has anyone ever had experience with an anemic ferret?

Why is he anemic? Has testing been done? Finding the reason is VERY important. It could be from an internal bleed, juvenile lymphoma, bone marrow not producing, a mistaken reading, anything.

That is still unknown. My vet just gave me two types of medicines, 1. To kill any parasites/bacteria in is system, 2. Used for bladder infections, respiratory infections, skin infections including mastitis, and coccidiosis, and 3. the Pet Tinic vitamins I think we may take him back tomorrow because I am not seeing much progress. :-( Not sure how long its supposed to be until I should see any improvement though. Im just praying he can actually make more on his own. I cant lose him :-((

I hope your little one gets better. Is ur vet an exotic vet or one very familiar with ferrets?
Did they do a fecal test?

If no real testing has been done, I would be taking him back in for it. Broad spectrum antibiotics/antiparasiticals help in many cases of bateria/parasite but certainly not all. And often to discover the correct antiparasitical you need to have a few stool samples examined as parasites aren't present every time. And then there are possible viruses. Here is a link on anemia in ferrets www.2ndchance.info/ferretanemia.htm

Did they do a fecal test? thank you very much, i hope so too yes hes an exotic vet and I was very impressed bc he actually knew what he was talking about unlike the other vet I had been going to. He said that he tried to do one, but he only got a tiny bit on the stick or whatever they use lol. Hes been extremely nice tho and has called twice since weve went in checking on him. Im sure he will recommend to come back in today since he still isnt doing the best.
