What you are seeing is a normal function of the bowel A rectal prolapse is one that is out more than 1/4", red, and stays out.

To give you an idea of the differences- this is a 3 image panel from google. the first image is a ferret(other two are hamster/gerbil) with a small prolapse, but one that needs treatment. the next one is a bad prolapse that needs surgical intervention

That's a relief! Thanks Sherry! His butt looked a little like the one on the bottom, but like 1/3 the size and disappeared after a few minutes. What I'm really worried about now, though, is his eating. I know it's spring and he's going through weight loss, but recently, he's been eating so little. He ate an ounce last night at 8 PM, and didn't eat anything else till this morning when I gave him his food. And even then, he barely even touched it, and I had to spoon feed him little bits, where he would lick the spoon or otherwise take a bit of meat off it and bring it somewhere else to either stash or eat. I ended up feeding him only about 0.6 oz of meat. All he wanted to do was go explore or play, not eat. I kept having to put him back into his cage to feed him. And today, he dropped this deuce in his litter box. I know detox poops can be anything, but I've never seen anything like this before.

Update: As it turns out, the problem might have been that I changed his bowl. I tried putting the food into his original bowl and he's eating again.
Will continue to monitor the situation and see if anything else changes.

And yes- they can INDEED be that fussy Especially at the beginning As for amounts, one of my males would only eat a couple ounces a day in the spring/summer.

Hey all, just thought I'd provide an update. Titus is back to eating about 3-4 oz per day, and I've been gradually reducing the amount of mixing in the processor.
He's fine with eating slightly blended stringy chunks of meat at this point, soon I'll be letting him have his food without blending it at all.

It sounds like he is starting to progress. What you can also do to make your life easier is start using some ground meat to mix in if you like. That changes the texture. Or if you prefer start slivering up bits of meat just a tad larger than the "stringy" bits in the blend. Add 4-6 in, and as they are eaten instead of left behind, increase the number.

Thanks Sherry! I should also mention that I have acquired a new member of the family: a 2 month old female kit named Lily.
I felt that Titus was too lonely when I went to university, so I decided he should have company.
She saw Titus eating out of his bowl and she took straight to the meat he was eating. I will take that as a sign that I can progress the two of them together.

She's still a wee baby, those tend to take to raw immediately, especially since she can still imprint on foods. Right now, just throw food at her until she can't eat anymore. Babies like that will eat several times the amount their adult counterpart would. "Eating you out of house and home" could never be more true than with ferret kits.
Congrats on the newest addition to the family!

Congrats on ferret math! It looks like you are doing great! Kits will not only eat a lot but they also need extra calcium so it is recommended 9 bone in meals a week for them. It is also recommended to do a 2 week quarantine when any newbies come into the home. I look forward to an update on them later.
