Some info to start with: My cat, a 2yr old, spotted tabby gib named Hades, has always seemed to have some tummy issues, but multiple vets could never tell us what is wrong with him, if anything. I could easily expect 1-2 pukes a week, beyond-toxic smelling poops, which also had occasional blood, very likely from anal tearing. He's always been on a high-quality kibble with some wet food diet, but since January I've been heavily trying to wean him off of kibble entirely, both to make my house completely kibble-free as well as help him to have more hydration and possibly softer poops.
So, it's been just over a month of Mr Snotty McFussypants (believe me, he deserves the new nickname) being on just canned wet food. Getting him off of kibble entirely and actually eating just wet cat food was one of the biggest struggles of my life, the transition with my ferrets was a freaking breeze by comparison.
Hades is still sorta iffy when it comes to certain cans of cat food, and I've been trying to rotate flavors and brands as much as possible to try and get him over his nonsense. He hates pâtés and bisques, and will only eat minced bits or shreds. Our latest flavor addition has been Duck... and his response was "I'll starve instead"... but in the end he changed his mind when I continued playing hardball for 2 days.
The problem now, is that he still believes any and all raw meat comes from the devil or worse. I've watched him just watch the ferrets eat their raw on the same mat, and his response is looking horrified and shaking his foot like there's something nasty stuck to it, or even making gagging noises. This goes for all of the raw in my ferrets' menu, Frankenprey, Rehydrated FDR, and Commercial Frozen. He doesn't want anything to do with it. I once caught him sniffing some beef for a second of two, and then he tore off like a bat out of h*ll.
I have no idea how to change his mind enough to try some of the raw. Ideally, I would like to switch him fully onto a raw diet as well, even if it ends up needing to be only Rehydrated FDR or Commercial Frozen. Even mixing a little bit into his canned food makes him ignore that bowl until it's just one hard chunk of dried and shriveled up food. And he will just keep yelling at you over it. He's also become pretty adamant since he's gotten onto only the canned food, he will actually claw you to try and make you go give him food.
Does any raw-fed cat owners have any advice that might work? Does anyone know of any really good commercial canned cat foods that I can use for now, or that can help transition him over into accepting the raw better?
