1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets? In a Facebook group dedicated to ferrets
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret. I would like for my kids to be fed raw. I am not sure about whole prey at the moment, as I progress and learn more that may certainly be an option. They are currently on "good" kibble and I want to eliminate that.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet? For their health and quality of life.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It requires a commitment of several months at minimum. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switching your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as committed. The switch takes time and effort every single day. It can also be extremely frustrating at times. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc), or limited time due to work, then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing and realistically able to make the necessary time commitment? I am committed to making this change. I have the time and foresee no life changes in my future. However, I do have an out of state visit to my elderly father scheduled for the end of February and will not be able to begin my transition until the first week of March 2017 - so to be on the safe side would like to begin on Sunday, 5 March.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? Two (2) What are their names? Monster, male, approximately 3 & Brandi, female, approximately 1. Do they have any health problems? Not to my knowledge. Are they overweight? I don't think so. Underweight? Monster - no, Brandi is very tiny & thin. How long have you had each ferret for? Monster since 8/24/16, Brandi since 11/2/2016
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? Kibble blend: Wysong Epigen 90 Digestive Support & totally Ferret Venison, 50/50 blend. I have recently learned Totally Ferret is not so good & have gotten Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost grain free Duck & Turkey meal formula to blend with the Wysong as I am running low. I treat them with Pickled Ferret's Pickle Juice (you may or may not have heard of it), but since becoming familiar with this group, and Euel Oliver in particular, I have purchase Salmon oil to replace it as I am almost out of it as well. Do they already eat some form of soup? Not at the moment, but I am planning to make the Raw Soup Recipe recommended as soon as I've gone shopping this week. I will freeze in ice cube trays for little waste as I try to introduce it to my kids.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? I have not. If yes, what happened?
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share? While I am new to being owned by ferrets I am addicted! I am researching diligently trying to learn all that I can so I can be the very best mom to them. I can be far too trusting, so am also learning who truly knows and can guide me. My husband and I had a little female we called Misty back in 1984 and were advised to rehome her when our daughter was born at 26 weeks gestation. It saddened us to do so. Looking back now it was the best thing for her as we had no idea what we were doing and she certainly would not have stayed in good health or been happy with us. Monster was a friend's grandsons "pet" who went to live with his other parent and could not take him so he was offered to me. It was several days before I could pick him up so I spent all my time on the internet learning all I could find. Brandi was a trading post ad in a nearby city. A friend who does rescue saw the ad, knew I was looking for a friend for Monster and called me. She was skin and bones & dehydrated; her eyes were very dull & a bit sunken; she struggled when walking & fell over often. She has gained 1/2 pound since arriving in her forever home on 11/2.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer? Daily
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible). Image taken 11.20.2016 Brandi on the left, Monster on the right.
11. Do you have a scale sufficient to measure soup ingredients AND to regularly weigh your ferrets? Yes and intend to purchase a better one prior to March. My currently scale will measure up to 4 pounds, but I do not believe it will measure in grams.
12. Have you met the requirements for this program? I believe so, although I have not actually counted my activities on the Facebook group. If I have not met the numbers required, I will certainly do so prior to March. Are you at least 18 years of age? Yes. Do you have your scale, a place to access meats, hearts, livers, etc? Yes.
13. Do you understand that if your mentor or an admin recommends seeking veterinary care and you refuse to seek appropriate care you may be dropped from the mentoring program? I do.
