I am wanting to try a frozen or even a live mouse for my two ferrets. My little boy is only 3 months and my female is about 9 months. Which is better to start with? They've just been on commercial grind. I feel like they may enjoy 'killing' something like the frozen or even the live. They LOVE chasing things that move or make noise. I know feeding snakes live there is risk of injury involved, is there any risk in live feeding for our little ferret friends? Do they have to be 'taught' or is it instinct? And does the fur on the mouse cause an issue for their digestion? (I have been reading in the whole and live prey thread but just want opinions or experiences as I didn't see anything about whether they might not like the frozen but would like live)

With live, there is always a risk. However with a smaller mouse that risk is minimal. One of 3 things will happen. Ferret will be on mouse and kill it almost immediately. Ferret will basically ignore mouse. Or ferret will botch the kill meaning you need to step in and end it to prevent any further suffering on the part of the mouse. As I am basically incapable of killing anything I feed frozen/thawed.

Even if they manage to efficiently dispatch a live mouse, if they haven't eaten whole prey before they likely won't recognize it as food. Easier to start with frozen/thawed.
Fur is not a digestive issue. It wraps up the undigested bits as they move through and it's all neatly passed.

So I got them frozen adult mice and Maple Maou LOVED it. Went straight for the head and ate it and ate half before playtime and the rest after. Mizore was interested and was carrying it around
