Hello all,
To preface, we have already been to the vets. My Zannie went from a war-dancing goofball, who speed-bumped occasionally, to a spunky lady with hind leg weakness in a period of 2 days. It was awful waiting the weekend to get her into the vets.
So back to the x-ray. The vet showed us on his computer, there's something, he suspects a mass, where her organs should be around the stomach area, her intestines are pushed down towards her tail, and both her kidneys are on one side of her body.
He gave us antibiotics and steroids, this past Monday. Her BG level was in normal range. She's actually improved, and her appetite and attitude are great. We go back in two weeks for a re-check.
But, I am shaken by how the vet reacted to the x-ray, and how out of place all her little parts are. She's 5, and has already had a chordoma removed a year ago. Recovery was not so great, she did not do well with surgery and I don't think I'm going to put her through that again.
My question: Has anyone dealt with anything like this?

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor furball. I've heard of a lot of issues in ferrets before, but I can't say I've heard of one quite like this, her insides sound all scattered about. I'm gonna tag some of the admins who may have heard of or experienced what you're little one is going through. Sherry , Heather , katt , unclejoe And welcome to the forum!

The mass is pushing the organs out of place is what he is talking about I am so sorry. The only time I have dealt with something like this was a very aggressive form of cancer, where the mass grew so large so fast we had to help Sinnead cross within a week of diagnosis. I truly hope that isn't the case for your little one, but I would also talk to him about getting a few days supply of buprenorphrine for pain relief "just in case". Thank you for the response Sherry, I will definitely talk with our vet about that. Thank you for that list, too. Zander is not exhibiting the things on that list, yet, but I am going to watch for them.
Whatever happens, I just want to make sure that she does not suffer <3

I'm sorry to hear your little one isn't well. As already said, it is correct that his organs are being pushed out of place by the tumor. I definitely agree on having some pain meds on hand to be safe. It would really suck to be stuck late at night or over the weekend with a hurting ferret and have to fork out a hefty emergency vet bill just for some pain meds.

Thanks Katt I know she must not feeling well, with that thing in her. Definitely going to follow up at the vets for some pain meds proactively. Just wondering, is the prednisone they gave her actually doing anything at this point? It seems a little futile.

The pred will indeed be helping her. At this stage, especially if you're not going to do surgery or chemo this is about the only other way to go. I've had a wee lad who on pred managed 3 remissions before passing at around 18 months after diagnosis. It won't cure, but it will make things bearable for her. Good luck, be strong ciao
