July 02 2007- February 16 2017. DIP old friend.
Almost 6 years ago we were looking for a friend for one of our ferrets who had just lost her life mate a short while before. She didn't get along with the other females we had, so we called the rescue to see if she had ONE male she could meet. They brought over several, including a bonded group of 3. And of course she took to the group lol. Unfortunately we still lost her to a broken heart.
Odin was the eldest in that group at 4. With him were Judge and Indie. Another young male Cody came along for the ride as well since he and Frodo hit it off, and Frodo was just too big for our tiny girls. Lucrezia was introduced and she and Odin became life partners very quickly.
He was a feisty boy, and would challenge Lucrezia who would promptly hand him his butt, and then kick him out of the sleeping den for a couple of days. He would sigh while laying alone in the hammock. Then she'd forgive him, things would be back to normal for 2 or 3 weeks, and he'd do it again with the same result .
He was never quite the same after he lost her. Much quieter, and not given to play. He had lost Indie, Judge, and Frodo as well until it was down to him and Cody.
He had been diagnosed with a liver tumour 3 years ago and after speaking with the vet, we were told he had maybe 6 months. He was put on high dose pred and 2 years later they could detect no mass any longer, so he was weaned off with no recurrence of his mass.
The last few days he had been on and off with eating so we knew he was declining. He would eat well when hand fed, and still pottered about exploring. At almost 10 years of age he had no real interest in playing any more.
This morning I heard heavily laboured breathing coming from the cage, so checked it out. Cody was laying on top of his friend looking out of the cage for us.
Odin passed a very short time after. He will be missed.
