Turns out he was eating the fleece tie on one of their beds..the vet described what it was and it was from that..I checked the cage and I did see where he had been eating it.. How do you stop that? He was doing it at the beginning but only fleece that was stationary..and chewing holes in things and had passed some fleece before after a couple weeks I didn't see any holes in anything and thought he had stopped.. How do you combat a behavior like that..do they just never get anything to lay on or in?

All you can really do is be very vigilant and get to know your ferret's behaviors.
Our ferrets free-roam our home, I do not keep things like rubber or foam anywhere they could possibly reach and them make sure it's kept in something sealed and even higher out of reach. No rubber toys, no foam toys. Ribbons and strings and things like that are kept up in containers too. My scarves with tassels are high on hangers high where they cannot reach nor climb to. I change and wash their blankets and bedding once a week, and I check everything over for any damages, our pillowcase-style fleece covers seal underneath the pans with a velcro strip connecting them shut. Toys in their stashes also get checked over very often. I've even mauled some of the toys myself to remove things like plastic eyes and noses or parts that could be chewed off easily.
If you have a ferret that is known to chew, you need to basically double your vigilance and certain items others might be allowed to have probably shouldn't be given to them. But the general rule of thumb is, never ever expect them to never chew something. Something like that can happen at any time.
And things like ferret-proofing is always on-going. Right now my husband and I need to put a panel in the bottom of my dressing table as my ferrets have taken a liking into opening the top drawers from inside now (they climb up from underneath), and getting on top and trying to run off with some of my necklaces from the stand on there.

I had 3 females when I was younger and they never chewed anything, I know they're all different, and I kept everything out of reach or out of that room when they were free roaming and never leave them alone but he was eating fleece..like in his cage. If he was eating fleece he wouldn't have anything to lay on..

Bedding chewers are the worst. There are workarounds using alternative beddinga but it's a major pain and requires realizing they are chewing the bedding before they manage to ingest some. Most grow out of it in time, but not all. Please don't be too hard on yourself, you did the best you could with what you have. He was lucky to have such a caring Mom and Dad.

I agree with Katt, it's really difficult when you have a little chewer to take care of. They're like magnets to eating things. And it's true.. not all ferrets are chewers. Mine two not chew things.. Athena did like to chew on cables at first, but has since grown out of it. But that is no guarantee. Sometimes a ferret who has never chewed anything in their life, just suddenly chews something. We can simply be vigilant and try our best, but sometimes even with that, these things just happen...
Do not be hard on yourself over this. Your little one loved you very much, as much as I am sure you loved him too, and thus he will always continue living in on your heart and memories.

I know no one is to blame..my vet said we can only do what we can with the information in front of us..and I do believe that..the block was moving..just not fast enough..I know I got him out of the bad situation he was in and gave him a sister and a huge room all to himself to free roam in..a good raw diet and not scrappy ferret kibble..he was happy and had everything he could want..
