So, while I was picking up some meats for the babies from Walmart tonight, I wandered past the frozen seafood section and picked up a bag of small sized, peeled, raw shrimp. This would be the first time I got them any kind of shrimp, I do have a bag of the PureBites FDR Shrimp treats for Hades, but I haven't offered them to the ferrets yet.
After we got back home, I got the ferrets their beach towel, water play container, and big bowl filled with water and tossed 5 shrimp inside. Athena was the first to start her mission of shrimp snorkeling, but they kept gliding out of her reach, the poor thing. Loki ended up trying to snorkel for some as well after a while, but alas couldn't snag any out.
Athena did end up managing to fish one out, and stormed off into our bedroom to, I assume at this stage, eat it (or maybe try making shrimp biltong or something I guess, sometimes she likes to dry out some of her meats before eating them). She's really turned into a blackhole with teeth over her meat. I tried offering Loki one, but he just looks at me like I'm retarded to think it could possibly be edible in any way. Didn't even want to try it with a dab of salmon oil either. Out of the two of them, Athena is the least snotty when it comes to what meats she will readily try first-time round and scarf down.
I think he would snorkel hunt more readily if he knew that he was hunting down some food from the bowl. Any ideas on how to get him to try and eat a shrimpy? Usually, the salmon oil will get him to try, but he was not in the mood for that tonight it seems. The following methods have never worked on Loki, scruff and stuff, he will just spit it out in your lap, or hiding it in a mix or soupie of other food, he'll just eat around it. So should I try offering some of the FDR treat ones first for a while and see how he takes to that before trying the raw again? And does anyone know how many small shrimp they can eat? I do not plan on making this something that happens often, it'll only be given occasionally as an enrichment experience and small snack.
