As some of you have noticed, we have a shout(or chat) box at the bottom of the forum page where you can talk with whoever is online(if they think to check it lol). How many actually use it? Should we keep it, or just get rid of it?

We don't monitor it. For all we know people are recommending feeding their ferrets candy all day.

I personally think it's a pain in the butt because people try to ask questions there vs making a thread and they get frustrated by the lack of answers. I've seen someone ask for help with an emergency once too, but they also ended up making a thread since no one answered in the shout out box.

I skim through it every so often. It might be best used for requesting/giving emergency advice when a ferrent can't immediately find the information he/she needs through the search function. As Aftershock mentioned, it's probably best to also make a thread, but at least this approach puts the question in two places and might attract faster attention.

I admit that I don't use it and only because I'm so old school I've been on proboards since before the shoutbox. But it's being used currently. Since it's not monitored, the three options are keep it as is and let freedom ring, assign or request someone monitor and moderate it, or junk it. Personally I've never seen anything offensive or even very controversial re: holistic ferreting on it. It's mostly socializing, like facebucket, with some quick ferret tips. Have there been issues with it, and does it cost HHF to have it?

I don't use it for ferret related things but I used it when I was brand new to the forum and needed help making my signature, posting pics, etc.

I do go through the messages every 2-3 days, or when I think of it. I do respond- again, either when I think of it, or if something catches my eye.

I don't use it either and usually don't spot questions until a couple days later..

It really isn't needed now that we have FB. If someone has an urgent Q they can ask there, or make a thread. It just causes frustration from lack of response as mentioned above.

I use it on occasion, depending on what I see at the time. I tend to jump it when someone requests me to check out a thread that may be urgent.

I use it occasionally. It is simple to use for newbies until they figure out how to maneuver around forum.

I have used it but rarely because you can only see it when you sign in and mostly I don't sign in when I am checking the boards (also don't really use facebook).
As it stands it doesn't do much but many years ago on another forum they used have a chat time. Basically they had a chat room that they opened at certain specified times and people would sign on then to chat with other members in real time. If a time was organised that people knew to sign in and have a chat then it could kind of work like that. Just a thought.

I use it occasionally. It is simple to use for newbies until they figure out how to maneuver around forum. I'm not sure how I got here, but, I'm a newbie and I don't use fb because too time consuming for me right now. I am STILL trying to learn how to use this fantastic forum. I used the shoutbox because I didn't know how to do anything else. Raynebc, thank goodness, was checking and answered my questions. I messaged with him for a while then tried to post questions on my own and i'm pretty sure I sent it to myself because no one has responded and you guys are great at responding. So now I'm still at a loss as to how to start a post/thread. I know it is probably SO simple, but duh! So for this reason- I think the shoutbox is good for us newbies :thankyou:
