Hello everyone! Hope you all had a fabulous, relaxing memorial day weekend ! I was at the grocery store the other day and i saw, for the first time ever, pork fat. Not only did i see it, but it was on sale for 85 cents a pound!!!!!! It was mostly fat with some small amounts of meat on it. Does anyone ever feed this kind of thing? as a treat or a way to get some extra energy in a skinny fuzz, or just because? The reason I ask is because i've noticed that most of the cuts I feed seem to be fairly low fat. I got a shipment of rabbit that has a small amount of fat, and my guy enjoys pork rib tips, which seem a little fattier than the other cuts, but it seems like the skin on drumsticks and wings is his main source of fats. Otherwise, everyone here has helped me create a balanced diet that my little monster loves- chicken and turkey necks, livers and wings, duck heart, pork, CGH, and rabbit. He even ate a rabbit kidney after he realized dinner wouldn't arrive until it was gone such a good boy. Beef is off the menu due to some explosive poops, but we've managed just fine without. I was thinking of adding the pork fat in small 1-2 oz chunks maybe once a week or so. Also, finally i'm uploading a picture. This one is from last summer, prior to our switch to raw. Weasel loves when we make pit stops so that he can run around and explore to car, or should i say my purse ;D Uploaded with ImageShack.us

What a beautiful fuzz!!!
I've gotten the pork fat before - my kids didn't care for it much but I think it a great way to add some fat to the diet. Be careful not to overdo it because it will lead to whitish stools ;D
Sounds like you have a natural on your hands!

What a cutey. I would feed it but be careful, you can get some really funky poops with that much fat. If your little one needs to put on weight then yes, but otherwise I would feed sparringly or with some very lean meats, like venison or bison ciao

I've also found soupies is the best way to get them to accept most fats willingly, stubborn brats that they are

Oddly enough... I have a jack, Thor and a jill, Nymyra... Nymyra has always been a bit thin, I feed them Zupreem and the vitagoop... I've tried raw foods and they have zero interest... i would prefer raw so i wouldn't have to worry as much
But Nymyra has a habit of hunting any expensive soaps that i have and tries to eat them. My boyfriend said it sounded like she was looking for fat- i have pork fat in my fridge- lard basically, Gave her about half a teaspoon today... and literally I've never seen her so happy.
When she finished she stalked up to me like I've been knowingly depriving her- her eyes narrowed into triangles and sniffed all over to see if i had more. I do plan on giving her a small amount every day- she's an albino and has always been a bit sickly, i hesitate to overdo it incase her body doesn't process fat correctly. Thor on the other hand wanted no part of the fat and is like a small badger- very fit. I appreciate everything ive learned in this forum. Thank you for sharing your stories & fuzzies!

My only concern (other than too much fat at once) would be development of an allergy. Pork is purposefully not used in most animal diets because it has larger proteins, which makes it more likely to form allergic responses.
