My fur baby (two years old) has IBD and vet wants him on prednisone. Please tell me about your fur babies that have had to be on it. How did it effect them and what should I expect?

Make sure it is prednisolone, not prednisone. Easier on the liver. And get the liquid, easier to give. My IBD boy was on it and it worked really well for him. He started on a high dose to reduce the bowel inflammation and after a month or so was gradually weaned off of it over the course of almost two months.

0.1ml is a low dosage. The lowest dose is typically 0.05ml depending on the concentration of your prednisolone. It's a very common medication/steroid used to treat many things for ferrets. Main concern is that it can cause liver damage from long term use, but when I spoke to my specialist vet, he said low dosages should not be much of a concern in liver damage.

Our Miss Prissy was on prednisolone liquid (15mg:5mL) for a couple years for insulinoma and arthritis, and she was pts at 9 years old. The pred was not a factor. She just got old.

Like Sherry said, it should be Prednisolone, not Prednisone. Prednisone is much harsher by comparison, as the animal's liver needs to do that conversion of Prednisone into Prednisolone now. Most people believe that animals should be given Prednisolone, versus Prednisone because of this, since animals with any liver problems are incapable of doing this conversion themselves. So if your vet gave your Prednisone, I'd go back or call in and ask for Prednisolone instead.
