Some late alters retain quite a bit of muscle. Shaman is the beefiest late alter I've ever seen and he's 5. He's built like a brick s-house. My jills were beefy as youngsters (especially Kachina) as far as girl are concerned. I think the jills lose less once altered because they never had the big testosterone influence on muscle to begin with. A lot of muscle retention and issues with adrenal disease may depend upon which hormones are elevated. It's very possible that ferrets that have high elevations of male hormones retain more muscle, but higher elevations of male hormone may result in prostate issues. Very little is know about how all this works. Some neutered ferrets may have high testosterone/androstenidione. But estrogens are not prohibited, and other growth hormones are required to develop and maintain muscle mass. It' a very complicated puzzle. I can't even imagine anybody experimenting with risky/unknown drugs in ferrets (which are already screwed up) to get a ribbon. -jennifer

That in my mind is just scary, but then I find it scary that people will do this to themselves for the sake of a trophy and a bit of prestige too ciao

In a way I think it would be worse to do it to an animal who had no choice in the matter.

Here's a great story. The judging at AFA show includes hygeine/grooming as a component in judging. Shaman's daddy (Zapata) is a black roan mitt, which means light/white fur in various places. When you show your ferret, you can get the comments written by the judges. One of the comments that Zappy received was for "yellow nubs" - his balls were not perfectly snow white. Do you have any idea what it ould take to get a greasy hob's nubs snow white???We all cracked , and Linda said, My God, I used bluing on them once, and I'm not about to poison my baby over a stupid ribbon." That comment made my day. ;D ;D ;D
Of course we with then thinking about what we could do with food coloring forrthe next show ; ;D ;D ;D

people here are pretty much against fancy colors and have a moan about them all the time... we dont have roan, mitt etc classes they are just lumped into the "colored" class... i've been tempted for years and years to tye die one of my albinos and enter them into that class for a laugh.... i bet i'd get a ton of dirty looks on that one..

Well guys, the cat's out of the bag... I already bought a ferret from Ferretown USA! In fact, he is on a plane right now flying across the country to get here! I'm excited and worried about him, I can't wait to pick him up! I will post pics...

Ferretown flies theirs? Every website I've looked at won't, it's one of the main reason I don't know how I'll ever get a privately bred ferret. What was the cost if you don't mind me asking? (Of the flight)

Ferretown flies theirs? Every website I've looked at won't, it's one of the main reason I don't know how I'll ever get a privately bred ferret. What was the cost if you don't mind me asking? (Of the flight) The airline charged $150 if under 9 lbs and $200 if over 9 lbs. I THINK that the ferret + carrier, food, and water was just under 9 lbs so I got the $150 price. There were other charges though, the airline requires a certificate of health which I think was something like $45 and then there was the cost of driving to the airport and the pet carrier (Ferretown is located several hours away from the airport). There was another person in Florida I think who was also having a ferret shipped so I think I got to split the cost of gas with the other guy. It was a lot of trouble and Nancy was very nervous about doing it, even though the airline says they keep the pets in air conditioning at all times (during warm weather) and give food and water. Fingers crossed, I pick him up tonight...

Please keep us posted, we're excited for you. I know that a couple of airlines that fly out of Canada won't ship pets during the summer months. ciao
