I feel terrible as I learned today that Ferretone can actually cause cancer in ferrets due to some controversial ingredients. This is news to me, and I am looking to switch over immediately.
My main concern is that my current ferrets were raised on it and they are now 4 and 5. I did do blood work this year though and it showed that they are both doing well, except for Ramsey who is Insulinomic since 2 years of age. I assume they are still healthy and the damage did not hit them yet? Hoping I am able to prevent it... I mainly used it to clip their nails once every few weeks, but they did get a tiny lick here and there as rewards for good behaviour (I believe training never ends).
Carrying on, I read that extra virgin olive oil and salmon oil is best. Where can I get salmon oil and how do I know which one is the best/appropriate one? Read somewhere that extra virgin olive oil can help with preventing inflammitory. I also have coconut oil on hand around the house, is it healthy and safe for them to eat that as well? Just skeptical because it is coconut and not meat-based. If it is, how safe would you say it is to feed them that?
Like I said I only use the oils for clipping their nails and for rewarding good behaviour (A tiny drip).
Thanks!

I use Wild Alaskan salmon oil from Petco. It does have tocopherol in it. I keep mine in fridge--- I find it in the dog section.

Salmon oil or some sort of marine oil is the best to offer. Olive oil and coconut oils are both veg oils and are not a good fit for a carnivore. Where to buy....I get my oils at a holistic pet food store but you can use human grade, order online. It's easy really ciao

I'm looking at PetSmart as that's the only "chain" pet store here, but all of them have mixed tocophenols? Is that safe? Cause I'm pretty sure that also calls from vegetables.

I also use fish oils. Keep in mind they may not take to them immediately and you may have to start them by mixing the new oil with the old half and half ( I use a VERY small container for this). And then gradually increase the new oil and decrease the old

I just bought some salmon oil from Grizzly Pet Products. It said it's advertised for dogs, but the ingredients for the cat one was identical (The store owner confirmed for me as well!) I'm super lucky. Lexy dug right into it no problem and loves it. Ramsey needed a few licks to get used to it but now he will lick it no problem! Hopefully the ferret tone did no damage and they will be healthy and okay.

The potential damage from ferretone is from long term use. And it is the fact that it has known cancer causing ingredients- not that it will definitely cause your ferret to develop it. But for me it is not worth the risk
