My condolences on the loss of your baby ferret Papu.
The only way to not get a ferret through a large scale breeding farm would be to buy through a private breeder or adopt a ferret from a ferret rescue. I highly recommend adopting one from a ferret rescue, but in doing so you are more likely to get a ferret who is originally from a large scale breeding farm. Every ferret deserves a loving home, regardless of their birth place, age, sex and so on.
If you aim for a ferret from a private breeder, you're looking at paying quite a lot, especially for a reputable breeder - who will likely require in their contract of sale that you spay/neuter the ferret and there may also be a certain age limit as to when they give the ferret to you. There may also be a waiting period or waiting list and other things that you may need to abide by according to the contract for sale between you and the reputable breeder.

Virtually the only ferrets available for sale in Canada are mill ferrets. Real Canadian, Holden, or what have you are no different than Marhall's. All are mills. Talk to your local rescue. They will often let you introduce your little one to others they feel are a good mix to see how they get along.

You might as well try to find a rescue and give a needing ferret a second chance. Our 2 real canadians have been a bit antisocial. Prissy was happy being apart from any ferrets, and Scamp has so much more energy than the Marshall's they don't know how to take him. Jaffa came from an unintentional private breeder. He was a BIG boy, but by the time he was 5 he had insulinoma and adrenal, and possibly lymphoma .as well. He was a real people lover, but he only made it to 6 years 3 months. Scamp, our latest REal Canadian , I would not recommend to a new ferret owner. He's high strung, high energy and high endurance. And he has the sharpest teeth! He's toned down his biting to play nips but sometimes still punctures my skin. It's hard not to discipline him, but I know he's doing so much better so he gets away with a lot. I have pretty tuff skin and high pain tolerance, and so, he lives.

I think there is a ferret breeder in washington state somewhere near Tacoma. I looked into them back when I was looking to add a second ferret. I probably will look into private breeders in the US again once I'm ready to have ferrets again in the distant future.
