My male ferret who is a year and a half old has been coughing or hacking today, my partner gave him some ferretlax to help him pass what we think could be a hairball since one of them is shedding. He went poop just now and it does not look right even for him when he usually has ferretlax for this sort of issue if we dont have pumpkin. I am wondering if anyone has seen this in their ferrets and have any thoughts on it? Going to book an appointment for the morning with him since there is no change in food or water intake and he isnt showing signs of discomfort.

I would be concerned with a blockage with this stool. As he's not showing discomfort I wouldn't rush him in tonight but I would classify this as an emergency run in the morning, and no I wouldn't allow the vet to say well you can have an appointment on Wed or Thurs or next week. Unless he's passed considerable more stool by then the morning, I'd be bringing him in. That's a sketchy stool for a raw fed ferret. For a kibble fed you could have some serious problems. If you've got white vaseline and pumpkin I would be attempting the blockage protocol. The liquid, jelly type stuff in the stool is the ferretlax. ciao

I would definitely try a blockage protocol for him.

1tbsp pure pumpkin followed 1hr later by 1tsp white vaseline. Repeat after 1 hour. At the end of four hours you should see a nice big gloopy orange poop. If at any point the ferret starts to vomit that means the blockage has moved and become a total one. This is a "right now" emergency and cannot wait. You need to get in have a barium xray done to show where the blockage is, followed by surgery. Sometimes the barium itself can push a smaller blockage all the way through.

Thank you everyone! I gave him some pumpkin last night, my sister brought some over, and he pooped orange, nothing in the poop. This morning i checked his poop and its back to normal. Hes not hacking or coughing either so I think he may have passed something at somepoint that i didnt see..hes loving me chase him around to every corner though when he goes poop... hes tricked me a lot haha. I did book an appointment just in case it continued though. He will be in first thing tomorrow.
