Been watching the forums for some time now and have a question, or rather an interest in opinion. I have a 8+ year old ferret that took a hard turn today. He has a tumor in his abdomen that we've been keeping in check somewhat with prednisone (pill form crushed and mixed with furovite). Hes been active and alert up until today. Today he has stopped eating entirely and will only drink water. With the water it seems to bother him as he will face rub the floor then go hide and sleep. Hes been very lethargic as well. His back legs have been out of commission for a while now but he's still gotten around pretty well. Today he looked slow and labored in his movements. Stool have been ok mostly but he did have an accident in the hammock and they are now starting to be slightly tarry. Is there anything about long term pred usage causing ulcers? I know hes getting close to the end of the ride but I didnt really expect such a massive change in one day. Im calling the vet in the morning to have him looked at but I was curious what everyone elses experiences are. Im mostly concerned about him not eating anything.

See if you can get him to eat syringed soupy. Even watered down baby food as he's accepting water. Tarry stools is very serious, as it usually means blood somewhere in the digestive tract. It could be caused by ulcers as pred is indeed very hard on their digestive tract. Vetting in the morning is an absolute must. He might not be eating because of ulcers but considering you're already treating him for a tumour already this also could be the issue ciao

Sounds like he's getting there. Wn we see black tarry poops we know it's time. You can try some sulcrafate to ease his tummy before he gets the pred, but s a matter of time IMO. How long has he been on pred?

Hes been on it for a few months now. Sadly I didnt even think about the fact that its Labor Day and all the vets are closed. I happen to have a package of Duk Soup so Ill try to get him to eat and see if I can get him through today.

Even meat only baby food from the store will help, and it is easy to feed from a syringe.
